building bass amps/cabs

hey guys. I'm new here to GS, but I'm curious about some things. I'm looking at getting new amps/cabs, but instead of buying them (a good bit of money), would anyone happen to know where I could read some info on how to build them. I'm going to install an EB-0 style humbucker in the neck position so I can run my bass stereo to bi-amp my signal. I can get a 4x10 and a 1x18 to run my highs and lows to. or would you guys think an EB-0 style mudbucker ran through a 1x18 would just be TOO woofy? would a 1x15 be better suited? I played an EB-0 through a 1x15 and it had incredible bass response. just curious as to everyone's thoughts on the board to that subject, and anyone know anything about building amps/cabs?

There's a few guys over at Talkbass.com
who are designing and building their own cabs.

If you want to go pre-built empty, you can also try fliptops.net
for Ampeg spec cabs.

Also mojotone music supply

As the above poster said, go check out talkbass. There are extremely few 1x18's for a reason. The 18" speaker just has too much mass to move quickly, which limits the attack of the note. This is the same reason why the 4x10 just about totally replaced the 1x15.

The best single 18 ever built is the EV Road Ready 1X18.
McCartney still uses two of them (Mesa Version) live teamed up with 2X10+15
cab.

You can find the schematics for pretty much any classic amp online. Ampeg had a B-18 that was 1x18, Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam has used one, I think for their quieter stuff. As you probably know, amps have lethal voltage so be careful, yada, yada, yada.

as far as building a cabinet, are there blueprints online? and for building amps, where would I be able to buy the parts to do so?

For building your own cabinets, try here:

http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Builders%20Plans/

I built 4 TL cabs and they definitely kick ass! One is a 2x15 cab such as the 2x15 Macca still uses on stage (FFTT - Mesa didn't offer a 2x18 cab).

There is quite a bit of info available for DIY cabs. I've not built amps and therefore cannot comment.

I must add, there's nothing that helps you stick your chest out in pride more than building your own great sounding gear! Have fun, and best of luck!!

Here are my four 10 yr old TL cabs:

I didn't have a yard stick with me to measure, but got a pretty close up
view of his rig at the show. AFAIK those were 18's in separate Mesa Logo cabs.
They looked way too big for 15's. He also had his 2X10-1X15 combo cab, so the
scale of everything sure made those cabs look like 18's.

One of my friends has the EV Road Ready 1X18 that same size
so I'm thinking McCartney had them special ordered through Mesa.

If I'm wrong, then so be it.

The left MB cab, adjacent to Macca's Vox rigs is the 2x15B (basically a TL606D), and the right cab is the 1516B. Same cabs Macca's been using for about 20 some years. I read somewhere that for smaller venues, only the 2x15B is used...

IIRC, Mesa didn't make a 2x18...

I have a 15 Altec white frame cast driver sitting here and I still think
those are separate 18's

His small rig is a Mesa 2X10-1X15 combo cab
over a separate 18"

He gets both definition and a full bottom this way.

If you speaking of the Mesa Boogie 1516B cab behind Macca, in this photo, I believe it is the the 1516B, which, according to Mesa Eng is a single ported cab w/ 15" + 10" + 2x6" drivers... Please correct me if I'm wrong...

The details are important, particularly to Beatles/McCartney fans, so we/they don't go looking for something that does not exist.

I believe this is the only post of yours I've ever seen that we differ on...FWIW...

I am not dead certain about these cabs, but from the front row at Fedex Field
those single cabs looked way too big for 15". Now you have me guessing :-)

Same goes for the multi-cab.

IF...... those separate cabs are 18's then by scale, I think the multi-cab is
a 2X10 + 15. I didn't see a 4th speaker.

I haven't looked at Mesa gear in years, so you may be entirely correct.

Just came across this old post at TB for a Mesa EV loaded 1X18 Road
Ready Cab.

The old Vox Foundation single 18 cab (it also exists as a single 15) loaded with an old Fane, Goodmans, or Celestion is a really nice sounding box, and I'm told that the AC50/Foundation combo was a common bass rig for studios in England in the 1960s. It's definitely a dark sound compared to modern rigs, but there is an appealing roundness to the attack and bloom of the notes due to the cone taking longer to get moving, which can allow you to use less compression on the bass, also it can work very well mixed with bass drum because the fatness develops slightly after the attack of the note, as the bass drum disappears (when the bd and bass hit together). The combination sounds fat without having to be loud enough to muddy up the mix.

The 18" Foundation is a surprisingly good cabinet for guitar too. I know that sounds weird, but it works. Mine has a Goodmans driver; Audiom 91 IIRC.

As usual, if you want a vintage sound, vintage equipment has that sound, and modern equipment has a modern sound.

Macca's touring rigs

The bass cabs used by Paul are as follows: Mesa/Boogie 215 Diesel series with dual 15's, the other cab is a Mesa/Boogie 1516BE Diesel series cab with a single ported bottom 15", a single 10" 2x 6" midrange speakers and a bullet drive tweeter. He uses a Bass 400+ head and a strategy 400 head amp. He has been using this same set-up since his 1989 touring wise. I am a professional McCartney impersonator with McCartneyMania and a active touring member of Beatlemania and own all of Paul's rigs for different show that I do.
I hope this clears up any confusion as to Paul's rigs and cabs that he uses.
