Recording a miked tube amp, Discovered something!

so normal, guitar >> effects >>> tube amp = ho hum, so blah..and kind of LOUD and buzzy with messy distortion and I never got that level of clarity I want.
then last night Guitar >> effects >>Tube amp >> Second gain stage tube pre amp I get just the sound I need with just the level of sound poking over the distortion!

Can any one explain how the additional tube pre amp at the end of the chain into my PC put my guitar over the top?

Before all this I used tube screamers (Still do) but before it was chain saws and beehives.

Please understand this is not a song, I'm trying for a certain "Level" and clarity.
Did the final tube pre amp get me some kind of second gain stage? I dont know all the terms, I am not a studio pro, just a week end warrior.

Nothing like a good clean HOT signal to bring out all the sonic nuances.
