Thread Starter | Stoner Rock - Tiny Terror or a Vox Night Train?
Sorry for pestering you all again. I'm looking to pick up an affordable low watt valve head. I've been looking at the Orange Tiny Terror and the Vox Night Train. I love both from what I've read and heard, but just wondered if any stoner/desert recording guy's could give me a little input in terms of which of the two suits that style of guitar? |

Take look at the Reeves and Reinhardt 18 watt amps. Also look at Ceriatone. Or........... Take up gardening ![]()

Tiny Terror is thicker toned, higher gained & more versatile with some good tubes. Stock ones are unlabeled junk. Reeves are worth a look too... never heard a bad word about 'em. That 10 watt head looks really tempting... But there's LOTS of great amps out there. Go play some. In person.

Enjoying my Tiny Terror. Goes pretty hefty and has a nice dark fat sound. Mine was Korean made and I haven't tried a newer Chinese made one, but I doubt it's an issue. The Valves in mine are labeled "orange" so that is of no help! Might try some NOS philips I have... Of course a Laney Supergroup or Klipp would be a classic stoner amp.. Oh yes and the gardening tip is a good one! |

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Korean and Chinese Tiny Terror amps? Do they use different parts? Sound different at all?

Forget the Tiny Terror, get the Orange Terror Bass. Get a cab with 12's that can handle the wattage and tune low on an SG. Plus you've got a pretty decent bass amp setup as well. Works for me. Didn't even need a pedal, just maxed the gain on it. Gritty, tube pre-amp overdriven goodness. |

You won't spend a lot more for a TH30, which will give you two channels, much more thump and really flexible power output, it's the direction I went. If I had to get one of the "mini" heads, I'd go with the Mesa instead just for the added flexibility of voicing...

I don't have any idea what is stoner rock, I've been clean and sober now for almost 30yrs, But from the sound of it I'd say you need a 100 watt marshal that goes to eleven. By the way the meta-data for that picture has GPS info embedded in it and your busted. I have the Mesa TA 15 Trans Atlantic head and love it dearly, great little amp out does both the Orange Tiny Terror and the Vox Night Train and has five different modes in two channels with assignable power levels of 5, 15 or 25 watts on each channel. Just Kidding about the gardening pic.

What kinda shite you smoking? 100 watts or go home My idea of Stoner Rock is Bad Company, Canned Heat, Mountain or maybe some Blue Cheer. Can't do that music justice with no wimpy Chinese amps. |

I hate the term stoner rock. If we're talking doom, heavy Sabbath infused rock in the vein of Electric Wizard, Sleep, St. Vitus and Kyuss then the Terror Bass would nail it. Most "stoner" bands like that tend to tune low and as a result utilize bass amplifiers. If you're looking for a more versatile set up look for a 80's Laney Pro Tube. They have 30w combo version and a 50w head version. All tube, basically a JCM800 with more grit. That would definitely suit the sound you're after. Need to get one myself. Old Laney stuff is killer. If it's good enough for Sabbath... |

When I think 'stoner rock' - I think 'Ampeg v4' or equivalent.

I think of Stoner Rock as pretty much the music that came out of the '60's California Hippy scene. Let your freak flag fly sorta stuff. From there forward to Woodstock through to about 1969. Of course the U.K. was a great contributor as well. And yes, there was a mixture of Severely "Drunk Rock" blended in. ![]() |

I just came across this and man does it bring back memories. I still have the original 45. This song was originally banned in the U.K. for lyric content. "My friend Jack eats sugar lumps" Acid Rock!!!! Listen to these classic guitar tones! And look at their gear! |

Actually when you say stoner rock I think of your typical "Hey Dude" mindless GC floor saleskid, You know the type, they just jumped out of the screen of Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure, Spinal tap type "but this one Goes to Eleven". They got all moves, Can do the Whammy bar Dive bomb to hell thing, shred a mile a minute but couldn't tell you what key they are playing in or what the time signature is. So tell me what record company sales executive came up with this term anyway, you think it will sell any records, will it boost musical instrument sales you think? |

I went and listened to some canonical examples and it would seem that certainly something more in the Marshall (or Ampeg as indicated above) family would be the way to go. It all seemed like basically 60's garage rock in a lot of ways, riff based, blues based, grungy, and heavy, with a sprinkle of magic chemicals on top.

FWIW - I've heard (probably here on GS) that the magic frequency for stoner rock is 400hz. All the 'wool' that you usually try to pull out - stick it right in there!

@ Biggator: Actually, It's 420Hz. No, that's about right. Listen to an older Mastadon album. It's full of it. (and there from Atl, kinda; Nashville before that)
