| Gear maniac | Keep the Blues Junior or get New Vox AC4TV?
Should I sell my beloved Blues Junior (blonde) for the new Vox AC4TV? I primarily just do some bedroom jamming, since I find it difficult to find the right people to play with- and occasionally use it for some songs at church. As far as tone goes, I prefer the British flavor, but it's a bit of a trade off I guess- the VOX has no EQ, reverb, or controls so I can control the amount of gain; just straight up volume. I suppose if I want both clean and distorted I can get a pedal, or always crank it but roll off the guitar volume a bit. I suppose I'm just waiting for someone to tell me NO! or yeah! Like many other gearlovers, I just want to get some new flavors, and possibly fund some other gear since the Vox would be cheaper than what I would make after selling the BJ. And a last random question- do Guitar Centers usually have these on the floor so I can at least try them out first? I'd be interested in both the combo and the head+cab. Those who also own either amps or have played them should chime in Sorry guys, and thankyouthankyouthankyou. |

Blues Junior owner here! Have you done any mods to the BJ? I wasn't really thrilled with mine until I discovered the BillM mods ( Billm Audio ยป Billm Audio Blues Junior Mods ). I did most of the basics (easy DIY) and really love the BJ now. It fits well the Tiny Terror and EPI Valve Junior in my stable of low wattage amps. The AC4TV looks cool and the price is right but doesn't appear very versatile. I'd look at it as a Voxy addition to my collection of one-trick ponies (excepting the BJ). I'd have to play one before deciding, of course. My suggestion is to save until you can get a ACTV4 (if you like the sound) and afford to keep (and mod) the BJ , as well. This is gearslutz, after all! If you record, you'll appreciate the variety of tones... If that's not possible--I'd say hold off until you explore the BJ mod. possibilities. Your BJ will seem like a new amp for a very minimal amount of cash. MR |

Thanks a ton for the input guys- I actually performed a couple of the Bill M mods- replacing the two EQ capacitors with the Orange Drops, and did the "twin stack" mod as well and it really does sing. As for recording though, you're right- I would have more options with the BJ, though I rarely record electric guitar these days. I'm inbetween jobs at the moment, which is a big part of why I'm even considering this. Perhaps you are right though, more versatility would probably be better for the long run. Although sometimes I even get too lazy to carry the darn thing around (even though it's a whopping 31lbs, ha). ![]() On a side note on the BJ, have you ever unplugged the 1/4" jacks from the reverb in back, and used those as an FX return? I heard about that the other day from an instructor of mine who owned one and I thought that was a very very interesting idea, though at the cost of the spring reverb. I actually just checked the verb unit on mine- guess it's not 1/4". I wonder if he was talking about a different amp... |
