I've been really looking at the Sansamp VT-bass... not a DI, but the demos I've heard on youtube, etc sound pretty badass.

I got the Tech 21 VT yesterday and absolutely love it.
the bass just sounds awesome with it.

actually I started to touch it softly when I have time.

EDIT: I still may look out for an RBI though, different animal.

I've had both of those in the studio and give them high marks. My personal favorite though is the PSA1 outboard unit... not the plugin. I think it's about $300 more. I use it for bass all the time, I really rarely use anything else, but then I tend to use a bit of gain on bass tracks. Either that or use the RBI/DI method and run Trash on them...

Peace.

I wasn't a huge fan of the sansamps, but of their current offerings the Paradriver is a very versatile pedal with the DI and parametric mids. I just sold mine as I was more intersted in overdrive than tone shaping and I don't need the DI but it was a good pedal nonetheless. Im using an English Muffn for my overdrive despite the large size and need for a dedicated wall wart because it blows the sansamps away for overdrive in my opinion- but a versatile tone shaper? not so much.

If you don't need a DI and you're into that SVT sound with just a little grit, the VT bass seems to be all the rage. But if you're looking for a gritty or crunchy overdrive with lots of mids, look elsewhere..
