I have an Epi VJ head just sitting around and I want to do something crazy with it. I have some friends who are masters of electronics who can do any kind of mod I want. They build some of the gear raved about on these GS forums. All they need is some instruction from me. I'd like to take a fun poke at doing something to this amp that makes it sound completely different than the other mods, or at least has some cool element that no one has. After I get the electronics modded, I am going to totaly redo the outside as well. Yes, I should probably just build an amp from scratch, but this is a learning experience and I would prefer to start with something. Besides, I already have the head, and I truly enjoy destroying things. I also enjoy overpaying for silly experiments like this to get my personal jollies. ![]() My first thoughts are to simply check all of the mod sites and get a "best of" list from that, but I don't know enough about electronics to come up with something unique. Would anyone care to offer me some ideas of how to wreck this thing -or- make it sound really cool? I know how creative you guys are. |

I've got one that my buddy Paul Sanchez from Red Iron Amps ( Red Iron Amps ) modded out for me. It's like a 5w Plexi now! We found an old Radiospares OT in England that also had a 4/8/16 tap which helped also beef up the low end. He did some resistor/cap changes, but the cool thing was he added a choke to it. We also popped in an old 80's Russian Military EL84. Can't remember what is in the 12ax7 slot though now, but something semi vintage. Lately I've used it with the Kasha Quickmod which allows it to be used as a 2 channel amp by connecting right into the 12ax7 slot. Can add another gain stage or two with that for really over the top 5w power! All this really rocks a vintage 4x12 Marshall with greenbacks! |

You can have a blast with a Valve Jr. head here. Watts Tube Audio ~ Everything Tube Amps! Replacement turret boards set up to flavor the amp Marshall, Fender, Vox. Enjoy your project and let us know how it turns out.
