Question To tolex or not to tolex ...

I'm considering picking up a Marshall 1960BV 4x12 clone from Mojotone:
Mojo Cabinets » Marshall Style 4x12 Straight Cabinet

While I like a few of their tolex options, what I'd love most would be to order it tolex-free, and stain and finish the raw birch like the attached photos. However, I am uncertain what the resulting sound would be.

On one hand, I imagine it would probably increase the energy and vibrancy of the cab. But on the other, I'm worried the tolex may perform a needed function in dampening highs and perhaps extending lows.

Has anyone heard or played with a no-tolex cab, and if so, what did you find regarding the sound and vibe?

Any thoughts or even speculation would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have used uncovered cabs and I didn't really notice a difference. I was using an open back 212 so it was a slightly different beast than a closed back 412. But I don't see tolex making that much of a difference... at least not an audible one.

The major downside to an uncovered cab is they start to look bad very quickly if you are gigging with them regularly. They get scratched, dirty and are a lot of maintenance to keep looking nice.

If you are just playing at home why the sam do you need a 412?

412 because i've never heard a 212 sound like a 412. close but not the same. every modern rock studio needs at least one 412 imo.

but i've been thinking about it and i retract my original question. i think i'll still with tolex for added durability as you mention and ease as well. less work for me.
