Vintage 30s Answers !!!

I need help !!!! answers please.
I have Vinatge 30s in my super sonic, I also have the same vintage 30s in my Orange Cab, they sound different also the Orange cab sounds much better when my hair is standing up.

The difference is in the mids and highs, mainly the mid edge sound.

My orange cab does not sound near as well as my supersonic, however it gets closer when the orange cab is cranked. I thought Orange cabs were suppose to be KILLER !! same speakers just a different cab, makes no sense when the change is in the mid and high end, sounds like a blanket over it.

What head are you using? I've always liked orange cabs.

different grill material will also have a hand in shaping the HF response and presence. basket weave, cloth, etc.

are you using the same head through both cabs? is the impedance matched? more details will help us answer.

Yes same head, Supersonic. I'm not to keen on orange heads, sorry. The supersonic suppose to match anything you plug in the external, 8 16 ohm etc.
Like I said if you really push it hard it brightens up a good bit.

It can vary due to inside volume of the cab... "Killer" is a relative term. What some people love others may hate.

Yea I know , I did not expect the lows to even be close but i was hoping the other would be in the ball park, I'm beginning to think that the grill cloth could be the difference like the earlier post said, makes sense.

There are many factors that make cabs sound different from one another, but also if one set of the speakers isn't broken in yet, that is another thing that can make a big difference. Is the Orange cabinet a new purchase ?

Closed back cabs of different designs will project differently, so try listening/miking in different distances from the cab.

I've heard some complaints from others that Vintage 30s can vary a lot. I have no idea whether that is true, but I've never heard a V30 I liked.

Wow I agree... I tend to think that Vintage 30s sound way to bass heavy... I hate Mesa Boogie Dual rec cabs for the same reason....

Having said that I've played vintage orange cabs (with vintage orange heads) that I thought sounded great... I wish I could remember which models though...

I have several V30s and they do sound differently, but not like different speaker types.

Have you moved speakers between cabs?

Cabs can make significant differences. My Mesa 2x12 cab is somewhat bright and while V30 sounds ok in it, the Texas Heat speaker (which is way darker) sounds much better in the Mesa cab than it does in my V4 cab, which is a dark cab.

I have a supersonic, I played blues/rock and i really love the SS with the vintage 30s, I have played Marshalls all my life with Greenbacks and now I cannot get away form the Vintage 30s, The orange cab is used but no in excess, I'm not sure why it takes so much power to crank them up so that they are sounding well, my greenbacks sounds well at any volume by sounded a bit better at lower volumes, I'm just amazed at the difference in the mids and the high difference between the orange cab and the supersonic (same speakers), no orange head involved here.

I think this is your problem. You need to assure it's matched to the cab to make a fair assessment.

How many V30s are in the Supersonic, and is that cabinet open or closed back ?

V30s are rated at 60 or 65 watts apiece IIRC, despite their name, so it makes perfect sense that it will take more power to get cone distortion from them than it does from 25 or 30 watt Greenbacks, all other things being equal. Also they are more efficient so they will be perceived as significantly louder regardless of the relative amount of cone distortion.
