Thread Starter | Pickup cover affects tone?
So, I've got this fender american vintage 62 pbass that I love, it's my main playing and recording bass. I installed the pickup and bridge cover the other night cause I really like the vintage look they give to the bass, I decided to record a before/after bass line but my playing wasn't really consistent enough... I'll try to do a better test sometime this week but I'd really like to know your thoughts about this. Does a pickup cover on a pbass or jazz bass affect the tone? If so, how? From my test, which was poorly performed, I heard that with no cover I had more sustain, less attack, but it's possibly due to my playing... |

A plastic cover really shouldn't affect the tone of a magnetic pickup. Humbuckers with a metal cover have a noticeable different tone than those without but that's because the metal cover affects the magnetic field created by the pickup... plastic just wouldn't do that. Its possible that it was your playing or, and please don't take offense to this, that its in your head.

But the cover I'm talking about is the metal one that goes over the strings on a pbass or jazz bass. Like this. | |

How can you play with that guard on there? I like to rest my thumb on the edge of the pickup |
