I need a replacement 12 inch speaker for old Deluxe Reverb

I have to replace the 12 inch speaker in my ancient Deluxe Reverb. I mainly play jazz. I occasionally need a broken up, distorted sound, but mostly I want a warm, fat tone. Any suggestions what I should get?

I'd contact Weber speakers and ask them what they have that would be close. The older Fender amps would typically have some variant of Jensen P12 (P12R/P12N/P12Q) and Weber does a good job of capturing that, in both Alnico (my fav) or Ceramic models.

They do both the warm and the breakup thing.

Hey Henry! Fellow Peluso CEMC6 lover here! lol... I use Jensen speakers in both of my Fender amps and love em... here's a link to help you pick your desired tone:

The Webers are better than the so called "Jensens", but the midrange response is not as smooth as an old (real) Jensen or Oxford. Ted Weber has been quite accomodating in offering somewhat of a customized speaker build in the past. I've had great results with some older model, low to medium power Eminence ceramics, or Tone Tubby ceramics, in vintage Fender blackface amps. Most of the dozens of currently manufactured speakers sound and feel (respond) wrong to me in vintage amps. Often, higher power handling speakers will sound harder and break up in a less pleasing manor in a Deluxe Reverb. A ceramic speaker will usually give you a bit more of a fundamentally solid note, where as a lower power alnico with a smaller diameter voice coil will give you more suff around the note. Both great sounds, with different applications.

What do you mean by "more stuff around the note?"

I'd definitely check out Weber, also. Reward the little guy who does it as a passion, and seriously knows the subject, instead of a product mass produced by minimum wagers. And it doesn't even really cost much more.

Just e-mail Ted Weber, tell him what you are looking for, and ask for a recommendation. There are models and options galore on the web site and I found it simpler and more direct just to ask. He's pretty responsive.

I replaced the stock Fender speakers in a 70s Silver Face Champ and an 83 Super Champ with Webers based on Ted's recommendations and it was certainly worth it.

Henry, The Scumbacks and Scumnicos are getting quite a bit of attention lately.

They are built to spec by Weber for Scumback.

Scumback Speakers: Simply The Best

Pete Thorn has an exceptional home recording clip running several amps and guitars
through a Scumback

From Pete

on this track you hear my strat, both my Suhr T's (one with hums and one with singles) and I used Badger 30 (main Hendrixy verse part, and the Beck-ish melody with a green Rhino) and Badger 18, PT100, Komet Concorde and a Top Hat Emplexador 50.

The Speaker for everything is a Scumback M75 65 watt version- LOVE it.

I have had a scumback 10" in my '67 Princeton for quite some time now, and have been loving it. I was really tempted to shell out the $ for some Celestion Greenbacks but just placed an order for 2 scumbacks for my '68 Twin Reverb.

I am anxious to hear them!

A lot of Weber Speakers are very affordable too... I don't know specific models or prices but I've seen some for as little as $30

I think the Eminence Cannabis Rex has a really smooth tone for mellow music. The Tone Tubby gets similar praise, but I haven't personally tried it.

cannabis rex in deluxe reverb

i have an early 70's deluxe reverb. the original speaker did not sound very good to me (utah? cts? oxford? can't remember). for years, i had a vintage 30 in it and it worked pretty well. i put an eminence cannabis rex in there a couple of years ago, and i find it way too bassy for the amp. i love the cannabis rex in my dr z maz 18 jr. i have run the DR out into an inexpensive Weber Signature 12 and it sounds great. Also into a 60's Jensen C12Q, and that sounded good.

I think i'm saving up for a Weber P12 type speaker.

Happy tone hunting

Don't email. Call him. And a Weber with an Alnico magnet is not cheap either. I spent $195.00 for mine.

One thing you need to watch out for is speaker efficiency and how it will affect
the overall tone and volume of your prized DR.

I just found this out big time after the tragic demise of the original driver to my
Ampeg R12R.

The original AlNiCo CTS driver had a soft smooth tone that broke up so beautifully when pushed but still at studio and small room volumes.

In an emergency, my friend and amp guru Eric at Viking Amps installed a C-Rex
he had handy at his shop and while the amp still sounds great, now the amp is
literally twice as loud.

If you want more clean headroom, this may be favorable, but if you are playing
low volume jazz, suddenly you are fighting to get the amp in the sweet spot
without exceeding your normal stage volume.

I figure the original driver was barely delivering SPL of 97 if that much,
where the C-Rex is rated SPL 102 and the difference is huge.

Not all of them are. The Blue Dog/Pup ones are fairly pricey. Others aren't. Mine was like $95 or so.

I have a C-Rex and it's way too bottom heavy for my taste.

It got kinda flubby with the neck pickup in my Strat Plus which is normally pretty mellow
on the low end with Gold Lace Sensors.
