Biggest guitar tone in history

I'm curious what everybody thinks in there opinion is the end all guitar tone, on a record, as a set-up, anything to point me in the direction of listening or looking at gear. Things that come to mind are "Big, Warm, Open, Epic, Tubes, Goosebumps, Erections, and the kid from Back to the future getting blown across the room from the guitar amp"

Whadya think, I guess I'm bored on the internet!!

Hmmmm...well my vote right now is for Ty Tabor's tone on King's X "Dogman" record. It is big and at the same time clear. Also, I believe the relationship (mixwise) with the bass guitar makes it seem fatter. The tracks "Pillow" and "Dogman" really stick out....but an amazing record overall.

Not sure about on a record, but in the studio, a Royer R-121, Shure SM-57, and Sennheiser MD-421 all do it for me. Use one or all three and mix and match to your liking...

as far as albums go, dogman is KILLER as most other kings x, but my all time fav i might have to say is sepultura, roots, any wallace preformed some voodoo on that album or something??? simply massive, huge, raw, beautiful...

i use a royer 121-57- api, very happy here, have more probs with getting to proper tone for the tune or mic placement, that kind of stuff, but when its right there is no problem capturing it.

Yeah... if you're listening/looking at gear... a safe, great sounding bet would be the 121, 421, and 57 through a API 3124/API 512's (Your choice, same sound, different formats) and then run it through an API 560 or two and you'll get some great tones with that setup.

Have fun!

I seriously love the guitar sounds on Stone Temple Pilots "Core", but then again I love every sound on Core!

I still like Kill em All. I have yet to hear a crunchier gtr tone. Also Vulgar Display is pretty huge crunch. Can't not like the first AIC record for gtr tone. I thought the first Killswitch record had bigtone.

As much as it is overlooked for lead tone nothing tops the Freebird solo. When you put it into perspective and realize that was tracked in 1972. It is amazing. It still holds up today. He doubled that solo when he was only 18yrs old. He made fools of guys like Geroge Harrison and Clapton at the time. Made them look like amateurs.

I also love some pink floyd gtr tone. As over processed and cliche as it is it's still great. A little less processed than floyd that is classic is VanHalen 1. I mean put that into perspective? Sure the whole shredder 80's metal thing is worn out but that came out in 1978. Pretty amazing when you think about it. Noone has ever topped that sound for polished shredder tone. I mean the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac were actually popular at the same time. That says it all. You pop on Van Halen and then Rumors or Hotel Cal and you realize how timeless VH is and just how dated and contrived Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles were.

Also gotta love Toys in the Attic and Rocks too. I mean that was the mid 70's? think about that? Great classic rock guitar. Highway to hell? yet another gem.

I'm also a huge fan of the S.O.D gtr tone, Friggin huge at the time

Cream - 'Badge'.. just chillingly beautiful
AC/DC - everything on powerage or highway to hell
VH - VH1 (does this really need mentioning?)
John Mayer - Continuum
Boston - Boston (people can make fun, but it's a classic, unique and instantly recognizable)

The opening riff to Highway to Hell. So simple, but huge and ridiculous.

For the era there really was nothing bigger or more innovative. I don't get all the hate. Tom Sholtz is arguablly the reason I hate the sound of beatles records so much. He prodcued better records by himself in his house than they did @ multimillion dollar facilites with studio players and no day jobs....

Really how many gtr players can play one note and you know it's them? He is one of the few........
Same with delp. I used to go see bealtejuice all the time and was in jusy awe of how much better
delp was that all the fab 4 combined......

In fact, lots of bands live. I've never heard a record that sounds as epic as something like the Melvins in the flesh.

(2) types of huge... the doubled thick sound and the single guitar thick sound.

for the double tracked thick sound, AC/DC does it well on Highway to Hell.

Single guitar: Live at Leeds. no question.

Randy Rhodes has always been a favorite. Such an incredibly aggressive tone. Listen to that edge to the notes on Blizzard of Oz. Nobody else has ever been able to capture that.

i have seen him live 6-7 times and have NEVER heard nothing short of a MASSIVELY huge guitar tone.

i still have yet to hear any examples that are "bigger" than Sepultura's Roots.....
