Devin Townsend's tone on SYL's "Underneath the Waves".

Just crushing.

I know this reply is SO expected, but I gotta say it.

Upon seeing the title of this thread, one name came to mind. Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I know its cliche, and I don't really even like blues that much, but the fact that that 10 foot tall guitar sound was made with very little processing is everything to me. I would never ever consider Nickelback. Yes is a big rock sound, but that 's not real. It's all compressed and enhanced.
Nothing has had the ricochet effect that SRV's sound has had on the guitar community, and nothing will ever touch it.

I agree, Stevie had the best tone.

Very little processing, yes but lots of amps and guitars for sure. For 'In step' he used a wall of amps and went to great lengths finding the right combination for each track.

Here's the only pic I found from the 'In Step' sessions, maybe somebody has a better one, but you get the idea....

Keith tone is big , huge. Open g chord like Start me up . Jumping Jack Flash - overdrived in natural way clean sounding amps have this bigness and fullness.
Similar - Pete (Hiwatt) and Angus (Marshall).

I am amazed the MELVINS have not been mentioned. Terms like "biggest" are pretty subjective, but the Melvins have the "biggest" sound IMO. My ears have never been quite the same since a show at The Troubadour in front of King Buzzo's amp. I have bought the same head he has used a lot (Sunn Beta Lead) and I think the sound is giant.

Melvins rule.

I saw a recent interview somewhere. Lately it's the Beta Lead preamp, Carver power amps, HiWatt 4x12's, and Dietz 1x15's. He only uses Boss pedals as they are replaceable at any music store anywhere.

Black Sabbath > Ozzy, Judas Priest, Stone Temple Pilots.

Ozzy has had some great guitarists. Makes me want to get a 12 pack and play along with No Rest for the Wicked (plus bonus track LOL)

Pink Floyd - Money (among others)

I have the original Harvest UK pressing of DSOTM and it's amazing. All the guitar tracks, and Rick Wrights organ/rhodes/keyboard tracks are way up in the mix compared to the standard release. Not sure if it was a totally different mix session or if it was just mastered differently but it absolutely rocks. Gilmour's guitars in Money are just ragged and blazing and in your face the whole time.

id have to say my favorite "big" guitar sound on a record is anything from alex lifeson of rush. they sound stellar for a rock trio.

Steve Hunter live in 1973 on Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll Animal". Les Paul Jr. through a 50 watt Hiwatt combo. Simply the purest, ballsiest guitar tone I have ever heard. Of course, the intro to Sweet Jane has become a rock guitar classic. Incredible tone, though.

David Gilmour does get some great tones in the studio, especially for the unique slow and melodic style he plays.

The solo on "No Fun" is the timbre by which all others are to be judged.

I've always felt that some of the monster wall o' guitar stuff on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness are just amazing, like Porcelina which is a favorite of mine. Those are just massive guitars, to me.

STP always and forever... VHT classic for guitar and Fender Bassman and Marshall Guitar amps for bass awesome!

But even better is Big Wreck "Inhale" Holy Crap!

And I know I'm surrounded by Metallica purists but the biggest Metalica tone is on "Sad But True" and no one can convince me otherwise....
