Thread Starter | Laney L5T Lionheart 112 WOW!!!!
I have recently started recording bands again (thank god) but have been really put off by all the crappy gear that comes thru. Guitar tone has been source of great frustration not due to my mic and mic pre collection, but to bands that don't have enough dough to buy decent gear. I decided to invest in my own rig after a sam ash 18month 0% interest flyer came thru, a blessing in my crazy cash flow world. Unfortunately that meant I was limited to whatever selection of amps were in my local area sam ashes. They carry a couple decent brands but Laney caught my eye since I played in a band for 5 years with a guitar player that used laney and I always thought the amp sounded incredible!!!!! I researched laney and the LT5 Lionheart 112 5 watt combo seemed like it would be perfect for a studio amp, but I had no clue what it sounded like. I went down to test drive the amp with a well respected guitar playin friend of mine and see if it would work. Plugged in my custom fender USA strat and proceeded to be blown away sonically. The range of tones you can achieve is extremely impressive. I can get a great round jazz tone and even a pretty convincing ACDC ton rip off. Since the amp is only 5 watts you can achieve fully driven tone at a lower volume which is very ideal for studio applications. I find a lot of my mics don't enjoy being on the grill of a 4x10 being fed 50watts. Microphones have SPL ceilings and a certain level of power will being to affect the capsule. With this amp its not going to be a problem. Full huge tone without bombarding the mics. The EQ is very powerful which accounts for the wide range of tones. The dirty channel sounds absolutely incredible. Once again the gain control is very sensitive and when fully driven is remniscent of marshall distortion. My bro who owns a 67 Fender Deluxe said the clean sound reminded him of a fender. The reverb sounds great and is once again very sensitive. I love the way every control is smooth and detailed. You can really get in there and dial in the perfect sound because of the overall feel of sound change in relation ship to how much you twisted the knob is just right. I know there is a more techy way to explain it. Surgical to musical balance is spot on. The most incredible part is the price. They can be found from $750 - $999. I scored and got a reduced floor model and 20% off which let me snag a memoryman hazari and a dynacomp. I am just happy that I have such a flexible amp for my studio. The bands are going to be happy when they realize their crates get to stay at home. I will post some sound clips at some point. Here are some links to the lowest prices. Don't forget, sam ash matches price and a lot of people don't know the brand name. There should be a lot of floor models out there that can be had for $750 or so. The tones you will get are worth much more then that. Laney make great amps. I have just sold my TT20 head which was a cool 20/7w head so I can grab something like the lionheart as the lionhearts let the guitar tone through a bit better. I may give this a go too BLACKSTAR HT-5 MINI STACK - U.K. International Cyberstore |

| Gear addict | weak reverb?
Hi. I just got a Lionheart (the 1x12 combo) but im am really disappointed with the reverb. I have it all the way up but it hardly sounds "full strength". Can anyone else confirm the reverb is extremely weak? Or better yet, if you have any clean clips that show of the reverb, could you post them? Thanks. |

mine gets pretty saturated at full reverb. I'll try to get some sound clips.

| Gear addict | That would be great thanks. I actually got some tips over at music-electronic-forums and modded the Lionheart to have a louder reverb return (beware, all the reverb signal stuff is SMT) so now it is fairly cavernous. I will post some clips as well. It would be nice to compare. This is the only shortcoming i could find so far with the amp.

Congrats on the purchase, though not my personal choice of amp manufacturer - I used to have a LC30, a surprisingly loud and punchy amp. My only problem with it was that it was so incredibly cold sounding, awesome for putting effects in front of but you'd never have guessed in a million years it wasn't solid state and was an all tube affair. The thing was great for doing lead lines on though thanks to that, really biting and clear through any band. I'm sure it would be a dream to record with for the same reasons.
