H&K Red Box MKII - no output

Hi all, I have an issue with my Red Box MKII DI box. I can measure the voltage all the way up to the output (actually, until the glue starts on the PCB because they didn't want anyone stealing their setups) and it seems to be ok but I get no output. I don't even get any readings on the XLR jack. I've tested the jack and it's ok, so no issue there. Battery is also good, all known good cables.
The guy I bought it from said it worked great for him, but I don't know him so...
The box says it has a balanced output; do I have to have special balanced XLR cables or can I use a normal mic cable? I'm almost positive that I can use a normal mic cable.

Thanks for the insight!

Normal Mic cable is fine. My question is ?? What jack runs the battery dead ? the 1/4 in input form the amp head ? or all of them in general ?
