Hey so back on the Best Buy thing, just checked my local one yesterday and lo and behold there it was! The new music section, pretty small but still stocked with some decent kit, even felt compelled to try out a 2008 LP with a nice honeyburst figured top which was i'lll be honest surprisingly nice (usually I loathe Les Pauls) anyone know anything about this years crop of LP's did they suddenly get better when no-one was looking? I mean even the finish seemed up to par, no weird frets or binding problems, smooth finish, neck felt really silky...

...anyhow the only downsides I had were that the staff so far don't know much about the stuff they stock, and were just a bit too enthusiastic (like sitting on my back while I was giving this thing a little workout).

Has anyone tried to haggle with them yet? One good thing about most music stores is you can usually get a few extras thrown in on a larger purchase or you can work out a slightly better price, somehow I don't see that happening at Best Buy...

I lost a lot. I lost that when I was earning about 12K a year as a grad student (with two small kids to support) toiling away like a slave and eating mac and cheese. I was lucky to pull in $25-$50 a gig and get a beer or two after the show.

I thought a L6 amp was a reasonable solution to carrying tons of gear from show to show. Hah! I bought into the hype.

Oh no, L6 corporate shill guy, you won. Congrats! I hope my stupidity got you a holiday bonus or something. Here's another finger for you, Mr. Moral High Road

Oh no, don't leave yet. Since I have your 'ear' I wanted to pass along some great new marketing ideas to the compnay:

"Just feel the heft of the particle board..."

"That's not bad tone for $5 worth of car audio parts"

"Normally, to get speakers like these, you'd have to buy a budget PA cab..."

"You can update this amp -- every knob, uh, I mean owner, gets a brand new set of knobs"
Honestly, I'm sorry you had a bad experience. You're honestly the only one I've ever heard of who had a Line 6 amp catch fire. Then I think of all the tube amps I've SEEN blow up... the odds are in line 6's favor.

But you have your opinion and lets leave it at that. I'm done with this thread.

I`ve rarely read such utter bull.

I have had the HD100 head apart and it is not badly built at all.
The head has also been used as a gigging tool on a regular basis and doesnt complain.

It sounds good live, records well and is a very versatile tool live.
The powerstage is a pure Bogner design, and there is now a preamp mod on the market for those who want tube preamp into digital modeller.

As to the new Bogner amp....I dare say it will be no worse than the Mesa Express, various Marshalls, Crates etc that are either wholely or partly assembled overseas.

Even boutique amps such as the Blackstar are built in the far east.

Certainly the Spider valve isnt a bad amp at all , so long as you understand how to use it.
As to the Pod range being rubbish.....hmmmmm

One of my favourite artists is a guy called Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree.
Check him out if you havent heard of him.
As well as being a prolific writer and performer, he is also an accomplished producer.
He uses a POD for some of his live and studio duties, and I hear no evidence of it degrading any of his work.

If Bogner is giving us an amp designed by him and produced at reduced costs in the far east , I for one would love to hear it.

yeah, if yer not turned off by the china/line6 thing & wanna pick one up, i snagged a 112 @ GC for just under a grand. the amp is tube & sounds nice. the delay & reverb fx sound alot like the POD. it looks to me like Bogner's version of "whoring" is using chinese labor, line 6 fx - warranty service - marketing - distribution. it doesn't sound like he skimped on the core amp components, very solid tone. he has cut the corners necessary to make a mass produced unit shifter as opposed to the higher end boutique stuff he normally puts out.

he's throws out a nice 'show me the money' @ the 5 minute mark.

(the thing with best buy retail is that if there's still a bunch of units left @ the end of the season, pricing will plummet.)

Yup. I use the X3 for personal practicing and recording and it's amazing. Sounds just like a real Marshall. In fact the JCM-900 preset I made sounds better than the actual JCM-900 I owned at one time.

thumbsup to the POD.

everyone wants to protect their investment... some people have bad experiences with certain pieces of gear.. i've purchased and sold several tube amps bc they either didn't meet my expectations, or bc the role they filled was covered by some other amp that i preferred over it.

I've had pod's go haywire on me, i've had spider amps fail bc the battery became dislodged and worked its way to the transformer.. replaced the battery, problem solved.. that being said, i've also had tube gear go haywire...

its easy to blame gear.. and i can see how if your livelihood depended on a piece of gear and it failed mid performance, how one might hold a grudge against the manufacturer..

[end rant]

has anyone tried the best buy bogner? i'd go try it myself, but i am allergic to idiots whose knowledge about a product can be summed up by reading the little placard that indicates the price of the product

I'm glad Bogner makes an amp I could consider buying... There are tons of mass produced amps out there. Some are good some are bad.... It doesn't depend on the manufacturer as much as the design and the parts. As another poster said there are some terrible sounding amps by Fender, Marshall, Crate etc. But those companies also make incredible stuff occasionally. That's the risk you run with a mass produced product.

I remember my first studio session ever; my singer's Orange head literally caught fire. It was a bad fuse or something. After months in the shop no one ever managed to figure out what was wrong. He did not have a good experience. He bought a similar Orange head a couple years later. Not a single problem... It's an isolated insident. Sh!t happens. Get over it....

Also I don't much care if RB designed it or not. I just think it looks like it might be cool. I need a combo amp anyhow. If it sounds better than other stuff in that price range I'm all about it! If not I might get a Mesa or one of those Vintage Modern Marshalls. Time will tell!

I was shopping for a new head when these came out. I thought the Alchemist was a good sounding amp, and worth the price. The cabinet isn't bad either. The effects are good - it's what Line 6 does best. I almost bought the head, but I chose something else that I liked better.

There's a reason it's on his website and not ours. I can't speak for what dealers and others state since I don't know them. I only know from the actually source. To each his own I guess...

For the record, I've been using Line 6 stuff for 10 years, way before I ever worked here. I've never had one product go south on me ever.

Thats funny I've had 3 different line 6 amps that lived a very short life. 2 were dead on arrival. The other lasted a whole three months!

Sorry to hear... Same amp 3 times? But there can be other factors like how it was handled at the from whom you bought it from or the shipping service handlers. It happens to every mfg'er whether after it leaves it's premises or there truly is an issue.

like my post clearly says, "three different amps". Over a course of years. Definately a line 6 build quality issue.

I can say from the personal experience with taking it home, playing multiple guitars through it, different cabs, and mics, there are a lot of great tones.

I found that active electronics do not work all that well, but it screams with a JB/59 set.

I realize I'm coming into this thread VERY late, but I saw the Alchemist head selling for $499 online and it sparked my interest...and while doing some research on it I came across this thread. Unfortunately I have not found one locally to try out, but at that price it may be worth ordering and playing around with. I see a lot of people hating on the Line 6 stuff, I've personally never tried any of their amps. But this seems like a smokin deal for a Bogner-designed, 2-channel tube amp with built-in effects...no matter WHERE its manufactured. I heard some samples on YouTube, but its hard to tell from internet audio at 360p.

Sure there are other amps out there in this price range (Orange, Blackstar, etc), but I really like the Bogner sound, and since my playing doesn't warrant spending $3000 on a Bogner Custom Shop head right now, I think the Alchemist might be the golden ticket.
