Best method for 1/4" cable run? Ctrl Room -> Tracking Room

I have a 1/4" patch panel on my wall between the control room and tracking room. 2 jacks are speaker and 2 are 1/4" balanced. It really isn't a long cable run necessarily but I do have an issue when running a head in the control room along with a combo in the tracking room. In other words, both a speaker level signal and an instrument signal are going through different jacks on the patch panel. When this is the setup, there is a LOT of crosstalk from the speaker tie into the instrument level signal. I have a Radial JD7 guitar splitter and tried using the built in DI out to run as a balanced instrument signal into my patch panel. On the other side of the wall, I used a DI in reverse to convert back to standard 1/4" instrument. This seemed to solve the crosstalk issue but I just wonder what it is doing to the impedance relationship between guitar and amp. I want to be sure I'm getting the best tone. Is there any other way of dealing with this issue that's better than what I'm doing?

i have been using this unit for years! i usually run the unit about 75 ft.. no grounding issues, very transparent and easy to use.

Alan Smart makes a box like this, for converting an instrument signal to balanced for a long run and then back again. It also iso splits the signal for multi-amp setups.

Smart Research

+1 for the STD.

Although, for some reason I can't run it in the same wall snake as my mikes, it makes a bad noise when I do so...

But when not running next to a mike signal, it is great.

I just used Buy Radial SGI TX/RX Studio Guitar Interface online at Musician's Friend this puppy at a church service this morning. Guitar and effects onstage, amp was about 70ft away in a storage room, used IEM's for monitoring. Really weird to get used to, but makes for a great mix out front. Seemed really transparent too.

Looks cool. Seems like this is exactly what I'm already doing basically. Using the DI out of the JD7 to make the XLR balanced cable run and then using a passive DI on the other end to convert back to 1/4" instrument.

What you have should be fine for a short run depending on the impedance of the DI. A decent reamp box at the recieve end would remove any doubt if you have one around.

Using an active DI instead of the passive DI on the JD7 on the send side would be better for a long run.

I use a Countryman DI > Little Labs IBP.
