Are those NOS Mullards or the new Sovtek-relabled Mullards?

There have been quite a few quality control issues with the new re-makes.

Usually when I hear really odd distortion like that, it's a sign that a poweramp or preamp tube is on its way out.

I'd have it retubed and I'll bet that'll fix your problem right there. Funny things can happen to tubes in transit even after tightly and carefully packaging things.
