Divided By 13...Holy shite

I just bought a Divided By 13 CJ 11 and it is absolutely fantastic. I'm blown away. Beautiful cleans and it gets dirty like a Deluxe on steroids. Absoulutely fantastic!

Yes thats a great amp. I like the slight different voicing from the pull/gain switch. I use this and the JRT 915 and can't be happier.

Did you try Komet, Cameroon and Bruno amps?
I think they are all quality-wise excellent and differ only in voicing and specific sonic character.
Only complain is that many of specialized boutique amps are strong in some grounds and really not versatile. /13 is frome that breed.

I'm all over the place about which amp to get. There are far too many choices of good and great amps. I think you really do get what you pay for these days, especially if buying new.

Tried a Fender Prosonic recently and I don't think it's the one, although it is really cool. Right now, the Bogner Duende has got my ear. It can do classic rock ala James Gang to a tee (maybe even better), and grinding metal (although not on the level of the Uberschall). Not sure about the cleans yet. The vibrato and reverb are the best I've heard on any amp.

I've found the same thing to be true. The Komet is great at what it does, but not versatile enough IMHO.

Welcome to the clubthumbsup I have a FTR-37 and absolutely love it. It's so easy to get great tones in the studio with it.

Hey Seawell,
Got any tips on recording it? This is really my first time legitimately trying to mic and amp. Most of the time, I have session players in the studio and the few demos that I do at home, I always used...yes, Amp modeling. But I was finally so tired of it (and I played the CJ11) that I thought I would give it a shot. Damn...it's kind of hard to get record quality tones at home. It actually made me think twice about my decision. Tomorrow I'm going to really crank it wide open and put a 421 in front off axis and a CM7 on the back. That might really change things, but I have to say, the convenience of amp modeling is certainly not lost on me now. It's just so frustrating to not hear in the recording the amazing sound of what's in the room.

JohnKenn,
I've had the most success with pairing a ribbon and a dynamic together. The best combo for me is the AEA R92 and the Sennheiser E609. Something about that combo just really works for me. I've also gotten pretty good results with the Cascade Fat Head II Ribbon mic. With the FTR-37 cab I have one Celestion Blue Alnico and one G12H. With that setup I put the Ribbon on the Blue and the Dynamic on the G12H. Even on single speaker cabs or combo amps I still like to use a ribbon and a dynamic mic together. The best way I've found to setup the two mics is a tip that Michael Wagener shared on here where you run pink noise through your amp to find the sweet spot. His tip is in this thread(post #12):

Let me know how it works out for you, Divided by 13 amps are killer so I'm sure you'll have no trouble recording some great sounds.

Thanks, man...that's really helpful. I'm about to try out a 4038, R84 and 121...Maybe I'll post some stuff here.
I've got a 421 and a 57 and honestly, I think they both sound kind of lame...

I kind of agree. I use an sm57 cuz it's there, but I've never really been wow'd by it on snare or cab. I was inside my upright piano. But for me, I...I'm jaded from garage band days.

The md421 is odd. I think the grace of that mic is really the positioning and the cuff switch (v, m1, m2). Cuz I've for the most part thought it was 'okay' but nothing immediately flattering, but upon listening to older stuff, I'm glad I have it. It really does work well for kick drum and lower register side of things.

Trying new mics for guitar cab? RCA bk5. Serious. It's ugly. It's awesome. It's got the full frontal like a sm57 but smoother response, less scratchy/breathy. Use a mic pre or signal path with enough gain though.

I'm trying to choose between a JRT 9/15 and CCC 9/15 for low-level recording. Any advice?

Johnkenn, how's your CJ11 working out for recording? Thanks for your advice!

I hear more about the versatility of the 9/15 than the CJ11.

In the CJ11 camp, I'd also check out the new Allen Chihuahua
for considerably less money and actually more versatility with
the Mid/Raw control.

The 9/15 has great tone and lots of nice variations with the dial (whatever its called)

A killer amp indeed! Nice and dynamic, solid midrange

Most versatile amp I have played is a Kingsley Deluxe so I am sure boutique stuff can be versatile.

IMHO, the 57 CAN do it alone, but I can't use onw w/o a room mic to make it pop.

The 57 gets a lot of love for a reason...but you have to find the sweet spot for it; or it does sound a little lame.

Guys, which 9/15? There are two, the CCC & JRT. Thanks!

I was only familiar with the earlier version, so I can't give a qualified
response as to the difference between the two.

Oh yeah - so they do!

I tried the JRT 9/15 head/cab - very innovative ideas with the 2 power stages - it sounds refined/glassy/meaty... all the good adjectives!

The 9/15 is definitely one amp that I would purchase used
in clean condition, even though Fred seems to consider
re-sale of his amps as an insult.

I would actually look for the earliest model possible
for the greatest personal attention to detail in the build.

Patience and determination can save you a good 30% off the new retail pricing.
