Hottie with a body

So i just repotted the pick ups in my Epi les paul. and it sounds way better the notes are warm and it just has a more vintage tone that rocks. But i was just trying to search the forums for this topic but i can't seem to find anyone doing this. I just wanna know some of the pro's and con's that people are having when potting their own pick ups. Do you guys think that potting your pick-ups is better than buying new ones or both?

okay so i guess nobody know's what i'm talking about. i'm talking about dipping your humbuckers in wax to play around with the sound that is put out of the guitar. I'm sure all of you have done it at least once.

Ah... Now I understand what is happening.
I didn't see this thread until just now.

I've said it all in the other thread though so I don't need to reiterate it here.

A question- did you repot it yourself or did you have someone do it for you?

Okie doke.
Who is this friend? Had he done it before?

Do you remember what temperature you heated the wax to?
Did you wrap the pickups in elastic bands?
Did you have a double boiler?

yeah he did it on his epi les paul it sounds really good but i'm assuming that it is just his orange head. we heated it to about 150 F. um no we didn't wrap it. what does that do? and the the humbucker was covered not opened face... does that matter I donno. and yes we did use a double boiler.

A lot of humbuckers are wrapped in tape which disintegrates when you dip them in 150 degree wax.
Wrapping the pickups in elastic bands stops the tape (and hence the pickup) from falling apart.

oh okay so if the humbucker has the cover than it's okay. no need for elastic bands?

Yes, no need- you can repot pickups with the covers on.

I recently bought an Ephiphone Les Paul Custom for grins. I think the pickups are garbage, should be thrown away. However, put new pups in there and they can almost, actually get very close to my Gibson Les Paul Standard. I put Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the Custom, liked it so much I bought an Epi LP Standard and put Gibson Burstbucker Pro's in the it and WOW, both of those guitars scream.
