hetfield's tone - dominant frequency?

came across this bob rock quote recently:

"The 'James' sound has a lot to do with the right resonance in a slightly enclosed space, as opposed to a wide open room. I don't want to overstep my bounds, because James is very protective of what he does, but let's just say that a certain frequency is really dominant in his sound. It's almost a matter of building a 'room' specifically to bring that frequency out of the amp."

anybody have any ideas what that dominant frequency might be?

sounds like a sh!t load of 1.5-2k. cut off the top and extreme low end, suck out around 400 and boost at 120htz. that would be my guess from memory... but I stopped listening to them when the band all cut their hair together. very symbolic. the music went with the hair.

thanks 84k, that sounds about right! I'll mess with it later this week when I have some more time.

I stopped listening to them after cliff burton died, I'm old! I'm not into their later stuff but I've always liked hetfield's tone.

I wouldn't think that at all. most of the older records are ambient sounding to me
I would think only KillemAll woud be an enclosed space

I met Hetfield in 84 and asked him what he used at the time. He said they had marshalls modded by the same dude who supposedly tweaked eddies. don't remember the tech's name.

Funny thing was their gear got stolen that same day. The original marshalls
used on lightening and kilemall were stolen along with that white epiphone flying V jamez used at the time.

I always thinks it funny when someone says they were listening to them since the beginning. I saw them in 83 at the rat twice in 84 at the channel. There was maybe 150 people there. Most of which were there to see the back up bands.

The last show I saw them in 84 was with w.a.s.p. Out of the 150 people there 75 had wasp shirts on. I met cliff that night too They didn't even play that show. Lars got deported back to denmark at logan airport cuz of a bum visa

I remember seeing kirk in the back of the club and he was using a walkman I said what are you listening to he said Mercyful Fate DBTO.

Wasn't the guy who used to produce them on here a while back giving away the secrets of the recording process? I could've sworn they were using some kind of Mesa with the classic V eq shape on the amps eq. I think it was a mark, the eq looked a lot like the one on my DC-3.

They used mesa's for sure but in the later 80's. Kirk may have used some stuff earlier. The first cd is all marshall. I mean you can hear it. RTL is marshall atleast the rythem gtrs. Isaw them twice on the lightening tour. They used marshalls live

I think Kirk may have even used ADA's in his rack. Who knows I would say the black album is mesa for sure
Back in 84/85 boogies were not really popular. The only two bands I ever saw use mesa live in the early 80's was Santana and Charlie Daniels. Boogie became a metal amp in 88/89 or so with the .50 cals etc. There is no way a stock mesa in 1984 could have produced the gtr sound on Fight fire with fire. But I wasn't in the studio so I sure as hell can say what they used

Im sure there is a web site somehwere that tells all

OT: that's amazing that you got to see them back when, IMHO, they were at their peak. I was 15 in '83 and not too many bands came to the small town I grew up in. because of a fairly hip record store I was lucky enough to get kill em all, venom's black metal, and number of the beast when they came out (along with a bunch of sh*t records). but my only claim to fame was seeing iron maiden in '83, the notb tour. unfortunately I got beat up by some bikers during fastway's set so I don't remember much... ah the good ole days!

here's some info about james' amp setup circa kill em all:

* Jose Arrendondo Modified 100 watt Marshall SLP
* Pro Co Rat Distortion Pedal
* Marshall 4x12

Looks like they used Mesa's on MOP and that would be somewhere around 85-86. Looks like they used Marshalls too but Mesas were apparently used also. At least it looks like it from the eq drawing.
