Open back or closed 1x12 cab

Just bought an orange tiny terror, should get here in a few days. I have a marshall 1x12 closed cab. It was the mate to a marshall 6101 anniversary combo. Anyway, I'm putting a celestion vintage 30 16 ohm speaker in it. i'm going to use it with the tiny terror. Would I be better off by cutting a slot in the back like an open back cabinet or leave it sealed? It has a bass port in the front. I know just try it but I would like to know if it's worth the effort to ruin the back. I've never seen the orange 1x12 cabs. All I can find are pictures of the front. Are they sealed cabinets? Are they ported? You see what I'm getting at.

Thanks

If you won't destroy the cabinet doing so, you could rebuild the back as a convertable, so the removable panel seals properly when you put it back.

You can also try running the amp closed and try using foam to block the ports too.

I thought of that, but the width of the saw blade will leave a small gap, altough small. Does the cabinet have to be sealed air tight?

You can use some weather stripping on the unseen edge of the removable panel and you'll be fine. Also if you re-Tolex the removable panel and the back of the amp,
the fabric will pretty much seal around the edges.

Now you'll need to install an edge around the cut, so that the panel has something
to screw into, but that's not too tricky.

A few cabinet builders are also now making a removable oval cutout panel.

Or........

Just have rawoods build you a new convertable.

There is supposedly some acoustic benefit to having the port rounded, but
that stuff goes over my head.

I suppose you could say the oval port would help it to sound less boxy.

Now if you really want to spoil yourself........

ooh, do not ruin your marshall by cutting it.

if the back panel comes off (like on a 4x12) then you could unscrew it, make a copy of the back panel and cut into that, so you've got two separate backs, one open and one closed, but i wouldn't make a convertible back unless you're really talented with woodworking and fab'ing and such...

plus: [warning, opinion coming here] putting an orange on an open back cab is just not gonna do it justice.

I would save up to buy something in a solid wood cabinet.

A variety of speakers would also be a good place to spend your money.

One Vintage 30 and maybe one Alnico, like the Celestion Blues, Weber Blue Dog
or the Tone Tubby Hemp Cones.

Well I made up my mind , I'm going to make it a convertible, just like the picture of that vintone cab, only a single cab. The cabinet is solid wood and was not cheap. The speaker that was in it was a sub woofer type, not a full range. I'm going to try a vintage 30, and may purchase a blue dog and try it. I can't be looking at new speaker cabs. Just want to get other stuff first and use the cab I have.

Thanks for your input, I got some great ideas.

Take a look at how the corners are jointed.

For strength, they should be dovetail construction.

For a well made affordable cabinet you might also try earcandycabs.com

They have dodo joints and glue, 3/4" birch plywood. Their signature series cabs look like a clone of the orange 2x12 cab. Dimesions are off by 1'' smaller than the orange cab. I purchased one today. I'm going to load 2 vintage 30's in it. I checked out earcandy and I like the looks of the lopo line better.

Thanks

I think that's dado joint!

At least you found something in your affordability range.

The earcandycabs are actually very well built, unfortunately since they are custom
orders, a few of the less attractive configurations have that boom box look.

I got the tiny terror. I made that marshall cab into a convertable, It sounds really good. The tiny terror sounds better thru a closed back cab. It doesn't have alot of head room and isn't nearly as loud as my badcat 15. What it does have is one sound, but it's great one. It sounds bright, but recorded with a royer ribbon it's just right. Pretty pleased with it. I would'nt gig with it in a cover band, not very versatile. A fulldrive pedal plugged into this and V30 1x12 cab makes it want to explode, haha. It really records nicely, which is what I wanted it for. Just thought I'd give an update.

But it sounds great with the Bad Cat 15 right?

Nice thing is that you can drive that same cabinet with a good 50 watt amp
and peel the paint.

How about some pix of your cabinet mod?

How do you make your pictures smaller? My pictures exceed the maximum allowed.

Anyway, we don't want to talk about my badcat. I just sold it to help pay for a new toft atb console. I made someone very happy.

I plugged my marshall 30th anniversary into it and WOW. Who needs a 4x12. This thing is a monster.

I'm going to get my 2x12 cab today, can't wait to try it.

Look at a program called ACDSee,for handling all your photo needs. Simple and intuitive to use

To make images smaller on my Mac I use Graphics Converter

You can also up them to imageshack.com and resize if you want.

Played my Hot Cat 100R through a single UK Vintage 30 awhile back and
it was painful above 2 1/2 on clean, but yeah WOW!

Those are good strong speakers.
