Didn't Harvey also do some guitar work on the Stones Black and Blue album?

| Uli Jon is awsome! Not to slam MS (who is also great) but the Scorps lost a supreme bit of unique sound when Ulrich left. Every now and then I throw in one of his solo albums "Fire Wind". Some great playing on there. His vox are a bit "over done" after a while, but playing is great. Speedy's Coming, Dark Lady, Hell Cat, Virgin Killer. God, I love the OLD Scorpions

Harvey Mandel was offered the lead guitar position in the Stones, and he turned it down! Oops! Another Decca-like blunder?

We all have worked with the most underrated players who's names will only be known on a local level never having made it to what by comparison to the local level would be the mainstream. Is that a sentence? I have the great pleasure of recording some of the best guitar players that I have ever heard. One of them has a fishing boat now and another guy sells real estate. and Uli Roth is a monster |

Pretty vague question(no offense). Are you talking about strictly rock guitarists or are we throwing a wide variety of genre's in there. Anyway, regardless of the get up and the silliness I think BucketHead is a very under rated guitarist in the metal genre. Sure, I just dug my own grave here but who gives a sh$t.

I just read most of this post, so sorry if they have been named already DAVE MURRAY and ADRIAN SMITH I know that iron maiden is a huge band but they really have always been mind blowing and original guitar players, a really nice mix of chops and taste. Trey Spruance (scummy) from Mr. bungle is an outstanding guitar player, can flip styles on a dime. Try playing some his stuff sometime, he is for real. |

Vince Gill is very good. I was quite suprised to hear how good he was on a couple of live specials I caught on CMT or something. Joe Walsh is also very under-rated. Very tasty. He sure is not technically perfect. I guess you can still be great without that. One of his licks from the Hotel California solo has probably been coped and used as much as any. I know Zakk Wylde uses it as does whoever is playing lead on the studio tracks for Kenny Chesney. Variatons are any 3 or 4 songs from Kenny. Every time I hear it I think Joe must be proud. |

Probably not a popular choice, but for me it's got to be The Edge from U2 - a perfect of example of a guitarist that plays for the song. Also probably one of the best rhythym guitarists going. Others:- Quote:
Ian Mackaye and Brendan Canty from Fugazi Ed O'Brien : Radiohead Tommy Victor : Prong Andy Summers : The Police Kim Thayil : Soundgarden Greg Dulli & Rick McCollum : Afghan Whigs Jerry Cantrell : Alice In Chains Dave Mustaine : Mega (always in the shadow of Hetfield)Even Johansen : Magnet I'm sure there is a ton more! | |

Derek Trucks Ronnie Earl Peter Green Robben Ford None of which are underrated by musicians but are almost unknown by the general public. The good thing is you get to see them live in small intimate venues. I've seen all 4 live and it spoils my experience in Stadiums forever. Guys I kill myself for not seeing while they were with us: Elmore James Albert Collins Albert King Not rock but they created some of the musical language we all use today without knowing where it came from. jim |

definitely props to the Def Leppard guitarists, but especially Steve Clark, he brought real heart and unique riffage to the decade of widdle, and doesn't get a lot of attention these days. such a tragedy. i used to subscribe to the notion too that Kurt Cobain single-handedly destroyed guitar in the early-mid nineties, back when I was learning guitar and still wishing it was the late 80s when guitarists let their fingers fly. about 10 years later though I realised it wasn't him, it was the million and one imitators who thought they could jump on the bandwagon by wearing a cardigan, groaning into a mic and strumming a couple of chords. what they didn't have was his songwriting talent.... he wasn't much of a guitarist but the little he did do augmented the songs he wrote amazingly well which is why we remember Nirvana 13 years later and not the wannabees who came after. PJ Harvey, definitely. and Mick Harvey, though to call him a guitar player is probably somewhere between a stretch and an insult (the guy plays everything).

| underrated guitarists...
Well, I'm just going to name my two guitar teachers that I had the great honor to study with: my dear friend, the late Robert Quine, and Pat Thrall. Both monster players with two totally different approaches to the instrument. Mark Cattano Magneto Studios www.myspace.com/markcattano www.heedmusic.com |
