I agree 100% Justin Hayward's playing is melodic, tasteful, and most of all, he doesn't try to show off! Even though he could! The Moody Blues have always been my favorite band!

I think he's great too, besides, he's a really good songwriter/arranger/producer.

Hey, this guy is really good. I don't usually expect much from people's "great" friends and relations, so this one caught me off-guard. He's got that Steve Vai/Buckethead/Blue Man Group/Fusion thing down pretty tight. Yeah, it's mostly derivative, but it's executed about as well as I've ever heard, so who cares? And his songs are all a lot of fun. I'd like to hear this guy channeled through a group of serious players who aren't playing such shred-oriented music.

He is good, I hear a Trevor Rabin meets Marc Bonilla kind of thing. Did I say that he is really good? I thought so.

I was cranking Sails Of Charon on the way to work this AM
I was walking into work still scratching my head how the hell ULI
could have come up with that sound in the 70's

Everyone else was playing blues licks and this guy is like pioneering
a sound like no other.

YouTube - Uli Jon Roth - Sails of Charon (Scorpion Days)

Listen to Schenkers outro solo on Mother Mary. Just insane for the time
Uli Rules!!!!!!! Michael Kicks A**!!!!! Can you believe Uli double tracked that solo? Few people on this planet could come close to playing that intro solo with half the vibe and tone all the way through just one time!!!!

Thanks:D

And just for the record, it's all him... No other players there.

He wrote, played, and recorded all of the tunes there, plus a few more.

Glen Campbell is a very good guitar player.

So is Martin Mull, actually.

When I saw him for the first time in the 1970s, Les Paul was amazing too.

Steve Howe my favorite of all time. Is he really underrated? It seems since so many guitarists are always named ahead of him and his name hardly comes up
He could do it all including some incredible lead work on the Album Relayer
which i think shows how amazing he is.
Lindsey Buckingham who gets overlooked due that he doesnt rock hard like some rock guitarists still shows incredible style and taste with all he does.

Not a fan of Howe on anything but the acoustic, Lindsey Buckingham can flat out play his a** off. Good call!

Slash.. I knew he was good but wow did he nail some good takes. I was just listening to Don't Cry and ok it's a shmaltzyish ballad but when that solo kicks in I feel like smashing a window. In a good way.

I wouldn't call Slash underrated, though...

Just thought of 2 more, and they can only be mentioned together: Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi.
Not the most spectacular of soloists, but man do they boogie!(They haven't been doing much else for 44 years, so...)

Did anyone already mention Frank Marino?
The mid 70's stuff is just incredible...
Listen to Child Of The Novelty, Strange Universe, IV, or the less psychedelic World Anthem (the guitar solo on Requiem For The Sinner is pure genius, Broken Heart Blues etc) and the first Mahogany Rush Live album.
Also Billy Szawlowski's engineering on these albums is top notch and innovative, wouldn't you all agree?
Timeless and priceless stuff!

Yes, Dan Mario's brother I am sure!

"Did anyone already mention Frank Marino?"

Why yes, isn't this Dan Marino's bother, you know -- Miami Dophins?

+11111!!!!!! Frank Marino is truly underrated. King Bee on Live, is one of the great moments in modern guitar playing. I guarantee that Stevie Ray Vaughn spent hours listening to it and trying to capture the vibe!
