Thread Starter | Fender Bassman 50
Hi everyone. I'm a drummer/keyboard player getting into guitar playing. Right now I have the following amps: - Fender Stage 112 SE - Vox Pathfinder 15R - Pignose amp I use these to amplify a Rhodes Mark II and a D6 Clavinet as well as my only electric: Custom 72 Telecaster (reissue). There's a Fender Bassman 50 head with its original 2 x 15 cab in my area and the price is okay. I could trade my 112 SE and some cash for this amp, but I wanted to hear your opinion. I read that Fender Tweed Bassman 4 x 10 is a great amp, but I don't know if the Bassman 50 is also a "classic" amp. Bear in mind I will get it for studio use only. I know it's supposed to be a bass and guitar amp, but I'm looking for just one great guitar amp. Do you think I should consider it? This could cover clean sounds and maybe I could get a preamp like the THD hot plate for distorted sounds without the excessive volume, or a distortion pedal like the English Muffin, what do you think?? Thanks for any help! Regards, rodrigo |

they're cool amps, and they're cheap. the "bass" channel has an extra valve in the preamp section and has a rather cool, distinct sound when used with a guitar. the late 60s-late 70s fender cabinets are nothing to sing about, really. i've always used every bassman i had with a "better" cabinet. there's even some awesome inexpensive stuff from Avatar that pretty much "brings it" in every way. their 212 "special" is just over $300 with shipping. i've also had great success with orange and certain marshall cabinets rather than the fender stuff. is the amp you're looking at a master or non master volume amp? does make a bit of a difference. i like both. they're just different. |

I thought of getting just the head, but the guy who is selling made it clear he's selling both. I'm not thrilled about cramming that large cab into my small studio, but if the head is worth it, I could get rid of the cab and find a medium or small sized cab as the one you're suggesting. If not, I could keep on looking for a better deal. The amp head only has three knobs per channel: volume, treble and bass. No master volume. Do you think this limits the options? I do wish to have a separate head and cab, so I can play and tweek in the control room and mic the cab in the studio room. Thanks for your response, best regards, |
