best stomp box compressor

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what the best comp would be to add to my pedal board...

My mate swears by the Keeley comp, and he's tried many pedals. Its very transparent.

the keeley is good.
the retrosonic is good as well.
i use the keeley all the time although sometimes
i wish it had an adjustable attack.
the retrosonic seems a little more transparent and has
two or three attack time settings.

an GOOD dyna-comp is OK at best, workable for sure.

a Keely is preferable most of the time

But! the new TC electronic vintage compressor is exellent.

I use it more for bass heavy tones, but I dont know what you are looking for.

try the TC if it doenst throw the aesthetic of your pedals, it is pretty dumb looking, but sounds really nice.

+1 on Dyna Comp.

No script on mine but I can't seem to get satisfied without it.

Original MXR DYNACOMP is the best ever,

the best in current production is the Keeley Compressor.

was interested in the barber tone press as it's supposed to offer parallel comping. my bass player had one lying around. joke. if someone made a true parallel stomp box that could be the shite.

never tried the keeley or diamond, but for now no comp for me is fine.

This is a great little compressor. I also have, and dig, a Keeley Compressor. I rarely use either though.

Keeley offers a 4 knob version with adjustable attack and trim controls. I haven't head it though.

Has anyone ever used one for line-level compression on other tracks?

Cheers,

You don't specify your setup, hence all the various suggestions (and more to come).

If you want versatile, look into pedals with tweaking potential, i.e Carl Martin and Diamond.

If you want a simple 'one man, one knob' thing, some very good pedals have already been mentioned in this thread.

My comp favourites:

Carl Martin comp/lim
Analogman Juicer
Ibanez CP 835

The Homebrew CPR saw off the Dyna Comp from my board...
Fantastic comp with a retro flavour, rather than transparent.

Love my AnalogMan BiComprossor (now that's a name!) 2 compressors in one, one side is based on the Ross compressor (that in turn was the blueprint of sorts for the DynaComp) The other side is the already mentioned Juicer that's based on the Orange Squeezer. Both sound great.

I owned the Keeley Compressor. In fact, I owned one of the first 300.

It's a really clean and transparent compressor. If I was after that sound, I'd be all Keeley all the way.

I wanted vintage mojo and my script logo MXR Dyna Comp delivers that and then some.

The simpler the better is my philosophy on effects pedals, if money was an issue (these script logo Dyna Comp pedals go for insane prices on eBay), I'd get the Analog Man Orange Squeezer clone.

It is a parallel compressor.. the first that I know of in pedal form..
Dave has made a awesome unit with that concept.

I use it on my gtr rig all the time and have been using it on Bass when tracking..
There will be a Linden EQ coming.. Which is like a B15 in a pedal. Sounds great..I've been running basses through the Tone Press then into the Linden then split to a SVT amp.

But on gtr that blend feature is awesome when you want to dail a bit of dynamic back in..And the sustain is killer with this box.

I went the cheap route and got a Guyatone ST2. It has a parallel switch (blending the unprocessed signal) and it does the job well enough on Guitar. It's useless on Bass however. I use compression to get good sustain and leveling for clean solos...so if I don't want distortion/overdrive (which compress the signal plenty) but still want the leveling and sustain.

The two-knob Keeley, note, has two adjustments internally that you have to unscrew the plate to reach. I haven't compared the Guyatone to anything, but it was cheap and does indeed work.

You should check out the Carl Martin. The Diamond would be the other serious consideration.

i have said it before and i say it again, i am just not a fan of the dyna comp.
when they are pushed they have to much sag and pump far to much for me :(
but thats me.
as for as i have found, as mentioned, the Carl Martin is the best i have used!

One of the cleanest is the Carl Martin, and it's very adjustable. My favorite could be the Demeter because it quite simply makes my tone and playing sound "better." Just a little warmer and punchier. For overall studio flexibility I use a Barber TonePress because I can dial in the amount of compression vs. source tone.

My Barber Tone Press and Barb EQ are the only 2 pedals of mine (all 12 of them) which never get switched off. The Tone Press also seems to add a bit of 'sparkle' or 'sheen.'

I didn't try any others before buying, but did some research. If I was to try another one, I would want one with a variable attack time, which narrows it down some-what.

I guess it also depends on whether you want one for sustained solos or one just to 'even out' your playing.
