Thread Starter | Running Tremoverb at Half Volume?
I’ve got a Mesa Rectoverb and am considering replacing it with a Tremoverb. Part of the reason I opted for the Rectoverb was because it was only 50 watts. However, I’ve since learned that you can run dual rectifiers at ½ volume by removing two of the power tubes (according to the Dual Rectifier product manual on the Mesa website). Unfortunately, the Tremoverb product manual doesn’t address this. Does anyone know if I can remove two power tubes from the Tremoverb to run it at half volume without hurting the amp? If so, will it substantially affect the tone? Thanks! |

Not a problem. Just remember they are paired, so remove the outer two, or the inner. Remove the outer two, simply because they're the easiest to get to. Which tubes you pull will not make a difference, provided your tubes are all the same age. Also, the impedance your amp is expecting to see will double. For example, under "normal" circumstances, one would use the 8 ohm output on the amp into the 8 ohm input on the cabinet... but with tubes pulled/half power, you would use the 4 ohm output on the amp into the 8 ohm input on the cab. Get it? So... Normal: 4 ohm > 4 ohm cab 8 ohm > 8 ohm cab Half Power: 4 ohm > 8 ohm cab 8 ohm > 16 ohm cab The amp will not be noticeably quieter at half power, though. It's still loud as ****. |
