Thread Starter | filters filters and crazy guitar setups? hey slutz, I know their are some gearhead guitarists out there. I want your opinion. Whats the sickest and BEST SOUNDING filterbank out there. Obviously their are lots of differnt ones and some shouldnt be compared to others. But I want your opinions. I do everything ITB right now and I really am sick of it. sure plugins sound great but I need knobs and I need my computer to be free for other instrumentation. I also like using my amp and reamping is just a hastle everytime I want to play. I was looking at a starting point of getting the Moogerfooger Freqbox or Sherman filterbank. Then adding some sort of rediculous fuzz pedal. probably the ZVEX fuzzfactory unless there is one that is just as chaotic and sounds better out there... Then If I become a rockstar Ill add the G System.....one day ![]() thoughts on filters...? |

| Lives for gear | The Moog filter (MF-101) is pretty good sounding, but it's a little more tame and traditional than the sherman. The sherman is one sick puppy and has many more features than the MF-101. If you have the money and you want weird/sick filtering i'd get the sherman. Another option would be to get yourself a MicroModular from Nord. Yes it's digital, no the filters aren't a huge sounding, but you get a LOT of quick flexibility. In the studio i'd prefer the Moog/Sherman option, but live I'd use the Nord since I could even program sequencers in it to do weird step pattern stuff, etc... The FuzzFactory IMHO is a must on any modern rock guitar player's pedalboard. If not two of them. The MF-107 is cool, but it's not a filter really. It's an audio modulated oscilator. More FM synthesis than filtering. Works well with the MF-101 however.

| The Studio Electronics one is pretty sick. Jomox and Metasonix each make some that are nuts but very pricey. http://www.bigcitymusic.com/dept.asp?cat=New |

| Gear maniac | I've never actually used one but I've drooled over a Sherman Filterbank for some time now... Check out the "demo video" on their website. http://www.sherman.be/ |

| You should also check out the EH Tube Zipper. It is like a mini sherman in a stompbox. It doesn't have all of the features of the sherman, but it can sound a lot like it. It also has distortion and is all tube. Its easier to gig with than the mighty sherman. |

| EH make a rackmount filter - not too bad. Very "vocal" quality. Moogs are good for a big, rich sound. Shermans are harder to control but very versatile. Not as rich sounding. Yuri |

| the Sherman is pretty intense IMO. It is not a subtle unit, and is a very powerful creative mangling tool. That said, it can also mangle your audio equipment so beware if you are going to use it in a guitar rig. I would highly suggest following it with a dedicated HPF and possibly a limiter. If you are not careful the sub-sonic frequencies it is capable of producing will eat your guitar amp for lunch! Some very useful guitar tones in this thing, however.

| Two hardware items not mentioned yet that I use for unique filter efx with guitar are the Linn Addrenalinn II and the Dave Smith Evolver. Both units sync to MIDI clock. The Linn takes a little longer to program and there are some limitations to what you can get out of it but I love the filter sounds. It can be very warm and rich sounding. Definately an autowah taken to the extreme with cool delay features. I always bypass amp modeling and use it with an A/B/Y box. That way I can send the guitar sound to a tube amp and the Linn goes to either the mixing board (in stereo) or another guitar amp. Stir vigorously and mix to taste. I have the Evolver mono keyboard and it has audio inputs that are routed thru the filters and efx. The cool thing here is you have realtime knobs for each control, it's fast and fun, old school programming. There are some factory presets for guitar input and this thing will make crazy sounds. The programming can be simple or deep, it's up to you. Oh yeah, it's a killer synth too.
