Fav Univibe type pedal?

What are you Hendrix lovers digging for Univibe pedals these days? Current models? Vintage yet affordable ones? Any secret weapons you can reveal?

I recorded a session where a guy had a Deja Vibe, I believe it is from Fulltone. I like that alot but it'sa little pricey for a one trick pony. How's the Dunlop? I know they own the name now.

Suggestions appreciated.

I dig the Fulltone 2 because it has the pedal right on the unit.

You are right though, its $200 +/- for that sound... which really isn't
too expensive if thats the SOUND you are looking for.

The cheaper stuff just sounds like chorus pedals that are farked up to me.
(the MicroVibe, Rotovibe, etc)

The only other one that sticks in my mind was the one made by Sweet Sound, I used to have one of those and thought it sounded great.

Supposedly, Sweet Sound, Fulltone and Prescription all use the same opto, so there you go...

Bob Sweet Mojo Vibe rocks.
I have a Captain Coconut 2, Dunlop Rotovibe and a Rolls RP147 that I use for various vibe flavors. My favorite though isn't a vibe at all, it's a Tycobrahe Pedalflanger.

I always wondered about this pedal. I am addicted to rotary speaker sound in ANY form. I actually like the line 6 stuff (hey, they got something right!)

I think voce makes a rotary pedal, but it's wicked expensive!

Surfkat - check out pedalgeek.com. this guy has most everthing in a pedal! Nice guy too!

Anyone tried the Fulltone Deja in stereo - mini or rockerpedal version?

I'm really keen to get a vibe type thing but want to run one in stereo into a pair of tiny terrors for a mad little reamp rig....be cool on all sorts of keys etc

But I need it to work properly in mono too for guitar!

Cheers Tom

Much on the pricey side but my fave is the Royer Voodoo Vibe. Just the greatest single studio pedal ever. Trem, Chorus and Vibe all in out unit and each are insane.

Yeah, that Voodoo microvibe looks cool. I checked out the sound samples on their website and it sounds hot. And the price is reasonable.

hey RichmondJames, where in New Jersey? I am near Atlantic City. Where you at? Near NYC?

I haved used them all. I am a bit of a pedal junkie. The Sweet Sound Mojo Vibe is without the best. The new swirl color is much more aesthetically pleasing too. I prefer the Mojo Vibe to the originals. Bob is a great person to talk to.

And the winner is........

Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe. Yep, I scored one on eBay today. Thanks to all those who offered opinions and ideas. I am on a tight budget and the Voodoo seems like the best bang for the buck. Now when I win the lottery I will probably go with the Roger Mayer.

Well, you made your choice. But I love Vibe, so I'm gonna chime in anyways.

I think the Lovepedal MagicBoy is the best sounding vibe. It's pretty basic on the controls, but it's got the real vibe sound.

I just picked up an Electro Harmonix Wiggler pedal. This pedal is Nasty! It's just FAT in the tone department.. It's Hammond setting is pretty vibey. Once you try it, you don't really want to play without it on. 2 preamp tubes that arent there for looks..

The Wiggler - That thing interests me too. I checked out some sound samples on the EH site and was impressed. It isn't a true Uni-vibe box though so I passed. It seems to be that ballpark but left field. Could be cool and unique so I put that on my list for later.

Yeah the thing is awesome. It's like having a few pedals in one. You can get a good vibe sound, and it's hands down the best tremolo sound out there, maybe aside from built-in's on some old Fender amps.. And it's also got some pretty excellent overdrive. Not an advertised feature, but the preamp tubes distort nicely. You can control it depending on where the input/output knobs are set.

The samples on the EHX website don't exactly do it justice. There's a demonstration video somewhere I saw on another website. They spend awhile going over all the settings and the sound's pretty good.

It's a little pricey brand new, but goes for about $120 used..

Has anyone tried the vibe in Amplitube Hendrix? I think it's amazing! If I could get that sound in a hardware pedal I'd be stoked. Is the Voodoo Labs comparable?

Yeah, much depends on what flavor you're after. The original Univibes are crazy expensive and very few of them sound like Jimi's. RotoVibe sounds cool and has a built-in pedal, but won't do the off-kilter wobble of the originals, nor will most other U-Vibe clones. The ones that work are the Voodoo Labs Micro-Vibe and Full-Tone Deja-Vibe; there may be some other boutique ones that work, I haven't tried them all. (yet, , )

If you're looking for a Leslie sound, (Univibes' target, but what a glorious failure) The Voce mentioned above works well, there's also a Korg unit (K4?) that works really well for guitar. (it was designed for keys) My personal favorite Leslie simulator is the one in the Alesis MidiVerb4. It's the reason you can still buy the MV4, it's been around for twelve years or more and you can get 'em new for about two bills and also get a bunch of sweet reverbs/delays. Under MIDI control, you can do fast/slow/brake and the horn comes to rest pointing in some random direction, just like the real thing, and unlike most Leslie sims, you also get the room it sits in. (in stereo, natch) Only caveat, you can't jes plug your guitar in directly, you need a preamp or an FX loop.

I finally got around to getting a MicroVibe the other day. I've been A/B'ing the pedal and the plugin through Amplitube Hendrix and also with the pedal into an amp.

The MicroVibe sounds like a nice chorus or rotary pedal. It's kind of rounded off with almost no chewing effect, not exactly very Hendrix-y. You can't really hear the effect when playing muted strings rhythmically a la Machine Gun. Not enough intensity and even if it was strong enough, it's not quite the correct sound.

Amplitube Hendrix's U-vibe gives the essential "chewing" effect, it ALMOST has the Berkley sound, it definitely has attitude and funk. It's playable, inspiring and musical.

I'm gonna sell the Voodoo Labs on and try a Fulltone...

Fulltone is where it's at

Got the Fulltone MDV 2 (the cream one with the pedal) a few weeks ago - it's the real deal... don't regret selling the Voodoo Labs for a second.

The build quality is positively Rolls Royce and the sound is totally authentic.

Amazing pedal thumbsup

Seriously, it's a very good pedal..the "chorus" is kinda like the univibe, but to my ears it's not an exact match. The Voodoo Vibe is VERY transparent in that it will affect all frequencies coming off your axe, which a lot of the earlier pedals didn't do...they tended to pinch off the low end..nothing wrong with that either.
I've played lots o'tremo-vibo-leslie-matic type pedals, and the ones I've dug the most were the Fulltone rigs, others I can't recall the names of...
My old rackmount Lexicon Vortex has a stupid good Leslie preset.
I'm quite certain this post will not be very helpful, despite my best intentions..
Something about hell...etc. etc..
Carry on.

Wow. The pedal is so much better. So hard to emulate the imperfect lamp throb via software. Almost any pedal will be better than the Amp-Hendrix virtual pedal.

My favorite is a Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe in vintage mode

It has more headroom, dynamics, accuracy, and is warmer, sweeter, fatter, fuller, cleaner, hotter, crisper, 'vintagey', and modern than anything you use!

I disagree, if you read down the thread. Do you own amplitube Hendrix?

Definitely agree on the Fulltone though.

Yes, I own most IK products, except for the new amplitube 3. When I first got the Hendrix, I tried to get that Machine Gun sound and wasn't very pleased, with any of the strats I tried it with (including one set up as close as I'd like to that Berkeley concert). I don't feel it got anywhere near what it should have. Part of the experience in playing a Univibe is feeling the 'womp' with a loud amp. Remember though, people settle for different sounds, if it's pleasing to you, it's probably pleasing to others or else they wouldn't be using that software.

I agree about the Microvibe. I owned that one for a brief moment before I realized that regardless of how I put it in my chain, it just didn't have depth. I tried the trim pot and other 'mods', but it always just seemed to be too phasey for me. Now, with a strat, a set of slinky dimarzio's, Fulltone MiniDV, pushing into an OCD and a cranked clean 6L6 on 5 watts and medium reverb, I feel I have a pretty damn good tone. It may not be exactly like Hendrix, but it's inspiring for what I play and it's definitely hard for me to put it down (one of those tones that can keep you hooked all day).

I tried the Fulltone 2 vibe. I thought it sounded very hifi (nice) but it didn't quite have enough bite and depth imo. The effect was a bit too superficial even at max. intensity. Anyone else agree?
I'll probably pick up the Roger Mayer Voodoo today, it seems to have a heftier character?

Did you try the Mini Deja, or pedal Deja, and was it the 1 or 2? The schematics are supposedly the same, but when looking for my Vibe, playing with both full & compact I did feel that the boxed version had more dirty bite to it (which is what i wanted). I don't know why, or cared to take the time to find out. Did you adjust the trimpot on the back? All the way cranked and it can be deep, but obnoxious for some. On a sidenote, I rarely ever set the intensity past 9 o' clock...nor do I ever use the Modern switch (stays on Vintage & chorus).

I also played with a Mayer and a Mojo (considered the holy grail by many), Voodo, the rest of the majors, and just a couple boutique that I can't even think of now. It cost me a lot :(

The mojo is the only other vibe that felt right to me, but it's voiced different. For each type of amp, OD, and guitar, each can sound good or shitty...there's usually no in-between if you are a tone hound. With my main setup, a Fender Am Deluxe strat with singles going into a dirty mesa 6L6, the Fulltone had the most bite and depth. The mojo was too deep, but had a nice random phase to it, and the others became rather thin or way too overboard. But thats with my amp, which is deeper than most bass cabinets anyway. This is Guitar->Vibe->Dirty Amp. With pedals it's, Guitar->Vibe->OD->Amp. Putting a vibe after a OD/Dist or in a loop ruins the sound completely unless the entire chain is sparkling clean...

Another consideration is most of our favorite recordings with Vibes were done with equipment that didn't pick up low frequencies and the dynamic depth we can present now, at least in their final mastered stage of format, nor did the engineers see the trend for it. So the vibe we fell in love with may sound different than what we are playing, though what you are playing right now could have sounded the same to Hendrix, Trower, Gilmour, while in the iso room.
