Thread Starter | Good, cheap speaker to pair with Epi Valve Jr head?
Just got one and I'm looking to throw together a speaker cab. I'm working in my home studio and I don't need a lot of volume. I'm thinking 10" but maybe 12" if I need it. I want a bit of clean break-up and not really looking for huge saturation. I play mostly Alt/Country, Blues Folk rock kinda stuff. Also, not too sure about what ohms I should consider. Thanks for your help. |

There are plenty single 12 cabinets available used or you might consider building your own from the selections available at partsexpress.com Earcandycabs.com also has a nice selection of custom made cabinets to choose from.

I'm going to build a cabinet. The question was about which speaker to load into the cabinet. |

My Valve Jr Head has enough kick to drive my 8 X 10 Ampeg SVT cabinet, so you should probably go with at least a single 12" I'm thinking vintage 30, but it really all depends on your personal taste. The amp itself breaks pretty early depending on your attack even through the 8 X 10 cabinet. For a single speaker configuration, it's probably best to go with 8 ohms. |

Thanks, Man. That's what I was looking for. I'm thinking the Vintage 30 as well. Any other cheaper one's to think about? |

I agree you need at least a 1x12 and Vintage 30's work for me. I run mine to a Fender Supersonic 2x12 with Celestion 30's/8 ohms and it is smokin! So as FFTT said don't be afraid to go with the bigger box,...... the Valve Jr will have no trouble pushing it. Stephen |

| ******//www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ker?sku=660287 this is the speaker i used. I first had a sony home type speaker in it. It sounded crapy good. I kinda miss that sound of an old speaker. the new speaker is way louder |

Hi, I am using an eminence 102, 8 ohm. It's a 10" speaker with an alnico magnet. I heard it's very similar to the weber alnico's, but less expensive. I have it in a split back cabinet that can be open or sealed. I used 18mm marine grade baltic birch plywood (which is void free). It's only a 1X10, But it is very nice. It sounds like an old jensen. really nice. I am using an older version of the 102 with has a paper former and is rated at 20 watts. The newer version (1028k) has a kapton former and is rated for 35 watts. Either one is good. The 20 watt version with the paper former is a little flatter than the kapton version. Nice cheap idea. Out, Robert |

| Cabinet style?
On that interchangeable cabinet back, do you prefer the open or closed back? What is the sound difference? I'm trying to decide which way to build mine. Another thing I'm wondering about is what is the sound difference between Ceramic and Alnico speakers, and why do you prefer one over another? Thanks for any input ! |

Check out the Celestion website. They say an open back cabinet is 'faster' with transients, which would mean brighter/more distinct. I went to the music store looking for a cheap 12" speaker for my epi and came home with with a $100 Celestion Greenback. So much for cheap. Might be good to have 2 cabs. One with a 'chimey' clean speaker, and another with a more middy speaker for crunchy stuff. I found an old 12" speaker from out of a late 70's Ampeg guitar amp, and it's super chimey - a nice contrast to the greenback, which is the king of midrange.

I got the Valve Jr head last week (had a $75 off coupon, not a bad amp for $24!) and I'm using it with a mini-stack Marshall 1x10 cabinet. It's got a Celestion G10D-25 in it, which just kills my Boogie 1x12 with it's stock Celestion Black Shadow.

I use my (modded) EVJ head with a cab loaded with a 12" Eminence 12LS16 (eminence's version of the greenback!) --> sounds great!

for what you're looking for, my first suggestions would be: Celestion Greenback or Eminence Private Jack I think both of those break up pretty early and just sound great in general. a single 8 ohm is always safe but I'd actually go with a 16 ohm speaker since the amp has a 16 ohm output option (you could also use it in a 2-12 later if you want to). if my understanding is correct the higher impedance should allow you to go further up that gain dial without it getting as loud as it would with an 8ohm speaker. (if I'm wrong about this, please let me know) many people are saying the new chinese celestions aren't as good or consistent as the old british ones. some say that's not true. either way to be safe you may look for one that's made in england, or screw it and go with a great eminence speaker made in Kentucky! the new eminence are fantastic. I also have a cannibis rex which is like a poor man's tone tubby. I wouldn't recommend that speaker for your needs though. weber also makes great speakers. they can get pricey though. lots of good choices out there but I'd go with a 16ohm Private Jack. they're easy to find too. alnico vs. ceramic: btw, ted weber told me that you only reap the benefits of Alnico at higher volumes. everything else being equal, we wouldn't be hear any difference between an alnico and ceramic speaker at home studio levels. |
