Thread Starter | Convince me: The Biz Pre +Pacifica P-1, or SCA pres?
Hey all,
Just trying to decide whether I should go the lunchbox route and get a Purple Biz pre and a Pacifica P-1, or take a chance on the diy SCA (Seventh Circle Audio) pres with a J99 and N72 module. I'm recording male vocal tenor/bass mostly with it, and just want to get something truly great and a good investment. I also like doing diy stuff though.
Someone convince me either way!
Thanks,
Mike

If for vocals, the P1 is hard to beat.

I appreciate the insights. Have any of you also used the SCA stuff too? not having the luxury of demoing the SCA as its diy, I wonder how it compares?
Also, are the pres in the lunchboxes a compromise? Ie, would it be better to pony up and get the standalone Pacifica, or better to go the lunchbox route? Any thoughts on any of this?
Thanks again!
Mike

PS not to muddy the thread, but I've also heard great things about the Jim William's AudioUpgrades pre; is this a contender as well? Anyone tracked vocals through it? I'm looking for as big and lush and full a sound, with openness and naturalness, as possible. I spoke with Jim directly (great guy!) and he says its great for tracking anything...
So, thoughts?

Word on the web says the P1 as drum overheads sounds good too. I shall soon find out! |

if you got the skills to build them SCA is a great deal, but that P1 is so hard to beat! and the 500 seres just grows and grows so go buy a rack!

The P1 is very cool. Although with your budget, you could just get the Pacifica and have two channels of superior preamplification. Apparently, Ronan (rcm on this board) swears that using the pads on the Pacifica yeilds almost a different sound all together. Which I guess, you consider being another two channels within the preamp.

And Ronan would be right...We have both a pair of P1s and a Pacifica, and while subtle, there are differences...for the most part, they are interchangable...
Until you hit that pad button on the Pacifica...then new worlds open up that may be just what you are after, or may be something to stow away for another time...
If you can't capture great and versatile sounds with either choice, then there is something wrong with the mic...yes, IMO they are THAT good.
