Thread Starter | EQ and the ADL 600
Hi, So, I've been experimenting with tracking off my AEA R92 or AEA R84 live (acoustic guitar and vocal), using an XLR splitter from the mic into the Presonus ADL 600 and AEA TRP. After tracking, I cut some lows and boost the gain a bit. All in my Masterlink. Thus far, I prefer the AEA TRP tracks. Not by a lot, but definitely by enough to make a difference to my ear. The AEA TRP recorded tracks seem to have deeper lows and smoother highs (cliche', I know, but I can't think of a better way to express these things). The ADL 600 tracks have more a midrange presence (though, not by much) but I think lose out in overall musicality. It occurred to me that perhaps the ADL 600 tracks don't take digital EQ as well. Is there something I don't know about tube preamps and digital EQ? Anyway, I think I'm still looking for that dream tube preamp to go with my AEA mics. And I don't think the Presonus is quite it. Once again, I do bluegrass, americana, old-time country, and rockabilly. Thanks. |

The TubeTech MP1A...or Manley DualMono are both excellent...but its going to be hard to beat the TRP...which is designed for those microphones. Better suggestion might be to acquire the desired tube coloration with a tube compressor...again the TubeTech ...the CL2.(less color than the CL1)...or Manley Elop

Make sure the impedence on the ADL is set to 1500ohm. Are you recording them both at the same time onto the masterlink? Is it the same performance? Is the eq a saved preset or do you eq each take separately? I'd also try a different eq... |

Yes, I had the ADL impedence at 1500. And yes, it's the same performance. I haven't messed too much with EQ settings. With the same low cut settings engaged, however, the AEA TRP wins every time. ( It might be useful just to compare the dry recorded (un-EQ'd) tracks. But there's fair amount of low-end rumble in them...................) |

On the masterlink, Are you recording one track on the left and one on the right? Are you A/B ing them by panning from left to right? I don't know if that's the best A/B.. Does the masterlink eq both sides, left and right, at the same time? | |

Sorry, Should have been more clear. My masterlink doubles as my A/D converter. Fed the two preamps via the XLR Splitter. Then fed a signal from each preamp into the Masterlink. Same performance. Fed the masterlink's signal to my daw and then back out to the masterlink (as two-track mono recordings) for each preamp. I probably should get a "quality" A/D converter but the Masterlink sounds fine to me................. I was listening back to the recordings today again in my car. I'm starting to like the ADL 600 more than before. But it doesn't seem to take the Masterlink's EQ as well as the AEA TRP...........But a completely dry track did sound marvelous off the ADL 600. I still think the AEA TRP is a GREAT little box. |
