V76 vs. V72

The TAB V76 has been called "the Godfather of all preamps".
V76 has 4 tubes
V72 has 2 tubes
I can get a pair of V72 mic preamps for the same price as a single V76 mic preamp. Why should I go with the V76?
Is the difference really THAT big?

Go to the TAB-FUNKENWERK SITE

These sites have lots of good Telefunken info:

Other than the obvious difference in gain, the V76 has a more open top end than the 72 to my ears but I have only worked with the V72 twice. The V76 is the sweetest pre I've ever used and wish I hadn't sold two of the four I bought in 2000.

I use both.....if you set the76 to 34 db it is pretty much the same as a 72 to my ears. When you have a whisperer in front of the mike and you crank it up you ll get better results with the 76.Although i know people that claim the 72 to be the superiour preamp . They are both excellent. resale value is better with the 76 in the long run i guess.....but thats just a guess...

Thank you guys! What I hear you say is that they are about equally great.... Some even prefer the cheaper V72. And since the V72 is half the $ I guess that would be the best buy, right...
Other opinions?

The thing in the middle is a "pegeltongenerator" which is more a gimmick than a workhorse . The other stuff: V76 x2 , v72x2, n52a, another v72 is with the doctor....

Given the age of these historic models, no doubt the condition of the components would affect the sound from module to module, and I wonder if the V72s I used simply weren't up to spec (Oliver did a fantastic job on my 76s) and suffered on the top end.

If I buy the 2xV72 and also want to use it for bass/Rhodes/synth/guitar I would need a seperate D.I. right? Any suggestions?

Or buy a rack from Oliver A. or Dave Marquette that has DI, gain control, phantom power and phase reverse.

Or ....in Germany :Neue Heimat.....basically same procedure....not cheap....racking two v72s (including matching etc) costs about a 1000 euros....If you will be working mainly with those two it might be a good idea.

I am actually going to buy from Neue Heimat. But I don't think their racks include D.I.

so, i work with some nice preamps on a regular basis. the v76, when it's in good working order, is probably the best sounding to my ears.

Geuss so... A shame. It was a really good thread I think...

But I am a very happy man right now because I just bought a pair of V76/80 preamps on ebay - in mint condition. They are on their way to HE studiotechnik for rackmounting.
I did it, I did it!

Did you have yours modified for full freq-response?
I have been told that this is a bad idea and a big misunderstanding, because the bumb at 16 kHz and 40 Hz actually is desireable (the bumb occurs right before cutoff) And that makes the sound bigger. And also the converters in a DAW setup have troubles handling freq under 25 Hz anyways and makes the sound worse.
So I think I will leave it with the original freq-response.
What is your thoughts?

Don't fix what's not broken - they sound wonderful as they are. Congrats on the purchase, btw!

I got them for 1500 Euro each

Racking a pair at HE studiotechnik is 890 Euro

Another german dealer has one V76f for 1508 Euro - I just talked to him and they still have it.

Active or passive? Don't know much about what is best for what...
Use for bass, electric guitar, Rhodes, synth.
Brands???
