Best Compressor for big 80's drums

I'm going to be building an 80's drumkit and am looking for a compressor to get that big sound. Any recommendations? (1176, DBX160, Distressor)

Do you know what compressor Phil Collins/Jan Hammer used?

Another vote for SSL-LMC1!
It's the most deadly ITB-crusher I've ever heard, and it's free!
I think it even sounds better or deadlier than the Bombfactory/UAD 1176-all buttons-mode

Definitely SSL in the case of Collins (the talkback comp).
The SSL Quad would be another biggie in the 80's.
As far as Jan Hammer is concerned, I think it would be something cool and vintage.

Hey, speaking of this, does anyone know if SSL's LMC1 plug will be ported to Intel as Universal Binary? if so, how soon?

I'm about 3.5 weeks away from picking up a new Mac Pro.

the best compressor for that 80's drum thing is reverb. drums and lots of room or artificial reflections, *both* fed into the compressor.

beyond that, almost any fast fet or vca will do ya.

All of the above for the Phil Collins thing or also try lots of gating for that Phil Collins and Power Station/Tony Thompson thing.

As for Jan Hammer, I thought a lot of his stuff was Fairlight and/or drum machine...I guess you could add roto-toms for that Miami Vice sound

Should add that 80's didn't have big drums ...have to go back a decade to "Houses Of The Holy" for big drums.

The Ridge Farm Boiler is a good recreation of the SSL talkback compressor. Use it on a room mic in a medium sized room - instant "In the Air tonight"...

Cheers,

Recky

i guess it comes down to how you hear it. i hear the 80's stuff as "big reverb"... gated vanilla drums in a big room, gated. it comes off as artifice: the sound of bigness, but not the physical impact.

much of zep actually sounds like big, powerful drums to me. there's a lot of room in there, but the drums still resonate and ring out naturally.

OT: What kind of set our you getting? I picked up a 83 Slingerland 5 set for $400... same Snare Neil used in the early days, its a very nice sounding set in its own right.

Yes. I agree. The 80's was more about size from effects than from compression.

And that said .... compression more often then not, especially in the worng hands, makes things sound smaller and thinner .... not bigger and fatter etc ...

So I was working at a studio and Kevin Shirley did a Journey re-mix one day. After he left I was finishing up and noticed one of the reverbs he was using had a 9.9 second delay. Apparently, the unit couldn't go to 10.
