Who can answer this one??

I am debugging my setup right now trying to track down a hum. I noticed that with just the audio wire connections hooked up from my outboard to my PT righ and the outboard rig unplugged that inserting each piece of gear into an insert show different noise levels for each piece of gear. How can this be since the outboard isn't even turned on?

PS.... PT is in calibration mode
