The only downside I can think of is one unique to my setup. It sits on my right side, next to the console, so I am listening mostly with my left ear (mono) to the speakers when I am facing the MC. It makes it a bit harder to get into the zone when mixing. This would not happen if the MC was set up correctly in the middle between the speakers. Some day...

Sounds like time to get a new (additional) set of nearfields.

Michael - I forgot to say - thanks for your feedback on the sync stuff and your detailed user report so far. Very much appreciated.

Its a powerful tool - much more so than it appears...I'm off to Euphonix this week for a proper demo so I'll ask them about the default user pref setting if I remember.

You'll prob have it figured by then but I'll try and find out anyhoo.

Best
Tom

The Sydec box is one of the most flexible and stable solutions I know. I use it together with the Mixpander card which is just . The Mixpander mixer can also be controlled by the Euphonix via HUI or Mackie Control mode. Have fun with it!

Hey do you know if you can switch the MC between Mixpander mixer (HUI) and Nuendo (EuCon) control on the fly (seeing as though they are on the same machine - I can't see how the MC's ethenet workstation switch will work)???

That would be seriously cool, SSL eqs, latency fee multiple phones mixes with verb and a powerful multitrack recorder / editor mixer with killer hands on control.

Cheers Tom

I got the demo on the MC controller a few months ago. Only seemed to make sense to me if you used multiple apps as that was it's strongest selling point. Otherwise seemed pretty expensive. I think it's funny, if you put Digidesign on this box I'd bet you'd have people saying how overpriced it is. For PT users the D Command smokes it for less money IMO.

It didn't help that the guy doing the demo in his little converted van was an arrogant a**hole and spouted all sorts of digital half truths.

Interesting thought. I'm on the line- the D comand is eh...not so grand, IMO. It has the buttons I want for tracking, try as I might I don't like mixing on it.

Euphonix has been making great DAWs and controllers- while I don't use multiple apps like Michael does, I'm strictly PTools since 1990- it's just what I use. But it seems a lot of people can do things BETTER than Digi does. As we see, price is not always the issue... but right now if I had the $$ to spend, I'd rather spend the 40k on analog console signal path and leave my DAWs as playback/multitrack machines, not mixers. Just my opinion/preference.

Michael, please keep us updated on how you like this. Maybe there IS a better way...

Happy Holidays, all!

Thanks to Michaels kind invitation I have been out to mess around with this controller. It's incredible! The only thing that even comes close for Nuendo to me is the ID (which is also incredible). However, the Euphonix has a lot of advantages beyond the ID... and the fact that you can control many other workstations is way, way cool.

I keep telling michael that he should go ahead and bite the bullet and just get 4 of the fader packs, drop the sonys and get some really cool analog summing. :D :D :D HA HA!! In 6 months computers will be fast enough to be able to do this right on Native systems with some nice headroom. They are right on the edge of it now. With my dual, dual core Opteron rigs I can do a 32 track, tracking session at 44.1k or 48k and use the Cubase 4 or Nuendo Control room section to provide cue mixes, verb, studio mix, etc.... all at 1.5ms latency. Works very nicely at about 45% of the host CPU load.

... and they have 64 touch sensitive endless rotary encoders that provide controls for sends, EQ, dynamics, etc. (all the usual large format console controls). And they change color depending on the currently selected function:

Oh yeah... and sooooo much more. And... soooo much of it is customizable. You can do just about anything you want to with this system.

Seeing it work with Nuendo is amazing. There is a real good set of videos about it HERE as well. They are all good, but the Steve Tushar when was my fav.

Euphonix definitely thought this one out very, very well.

The 56 SmartSwitches have little LCD screens and the lables change according to the function they are assigned to. You can hook up 4 DAWs at the same time via Ethernet (ProTools, Nuendo, Pyramix, Logic, Final Cut Pro, DP, or any other) and with a push of a button switch between them and all functions change to the connected DAW. Nuendo runs under the EuCon protocol (so does Logic and Pyramix), where every function is assigned to a knob or button on the control surface, total integration, makes editing a breeze. ProTools, Digital Performer and Final Cut Pro run under Mackie/HUI control.

It has four assignable high res 100mm faders and a touch screen for easy channel access. You can add faderpacks of 8 faders each and build a complete console controller. I still mix through the Sonys but all the DAW functions are now on the MC. Anybody want to buy a slightly used Presonus Faderport Check it out here

I also got myself a pair of the new Mojave Audio MA200 LD tube mics:

Great all around microphones, love 'em on cymbals, piano, acoustic guitar, percussion, basically everything that needs a clear smooth top end and a nice big body. Haven't tried them on vocals yet (been mixing for a while), but I could imagine those to sound great on vocals.

Another fantstic mic I have at the studio right now, is the Royer R-122V tube ribbon. Very similar sound to the R-121, but a bit more fat midrange, very even frequency response with a lot of oompf. This one is not cheap, so I am still debating if it cuts too deep into my Sushi budget.

And finally, on order and on the way (I hope) the new SSL Alphalink MADI SX analog/AES to MADI converter. It has 24 channels of balanced analog in AND out, as well as 24 channels of AES in AND out and 64 channels of MADI in and out, plus MIDI in/out. SSL bought those products from Sydec in Belgium and modified them to their taste. Looks like a great box to me.

With the second RME MADI card in my Nuendo computer, I now have 128 I/O available

That's it for now, and it's not even Christmas yet
