Neve 8816 vs Nicerizer16

Hi,

I am deciding between those two summing amps, mainly mixing rock/metal.
I am looking for color and punch.
I would like to hear some opinions from somebody who had a chance testing them both.

thanks
david

I really like the sound and features of the Neve 8816. Search and you should find lots of feedback about it and the 8804 fader pack.

I have read through almost every post about the 8816 and the nicerizer. as always the feedback is very varying.

there were many posts about defective 8816s and now effectsnut says the same about the nicerizer

as I see build quality is dfegad theese days

I had both and kept Nicerizer. It's matter of taste, I could work equally well with any of them, as well as, with other good summing boxes.
I used 2 Nicerizers (took one from firend), as well as, with Mixdream.
To my ears Nicerizer has more of nice analogue warmth and dynamic coupled with great resolution what's actually I looked for. I don't say that 8816 misses it, but to my style of work Nicer is just much closer sonically, although I would be happy to have Neve's added functions.
I heard about technical issues with Nicerizers, but in my case during non-stop usage for quite a long period it never failed. Build quality appears good. New modified Nicerizer 16 differs visually inside, so I really don't know what is real reason behind quality problems.
In my case an impression from Neve was that built quality is just rather average and whole concept looks attractive to reach good sales figures.
I dare to suggest that Neve is probably better buy (badge, features, fader pack add-on), but I wouldn't swap my Nicer for 8816 with faders, as I know I would miss its sonics.

It would be great if people would stop using every opportunity they could to bash Phoenix!

I'm not sure what happened with Effectsnut's Nicerizer, but Phoenix is not the type of company to have shoddy build qualitiy, not in the least. All of my phoenix gear (recently acquired over the last 6 months) has been in perfect shape, well built, built to last.

Effectsnut may indeed have a problem with his unit, but I'm sure it can be taken care of. I'm also sure that it is not a "standard problem" that will be common. We need to be careful about propogating issues like this like they're some kind of commonplace occurance. This is the first time I've ever heard of Phoenix gear arriving messed up!!!

The Nicerizer16 is extraordinary. I can't imagine the 8816 being much better, but that's a biased owner's opinion. Just so sweet and ballsy.

I'd lean towards Phoenix just because of the love they put into the design of their products. If I were choosing just one and not shooting them out, that's the way I'd go. Hell, that *is* the way I went.

The fader pack is very pricey - is it motorized? Sorry I haven't read about the Fader pack - just saw the price when I was scrolling through a price list pdf....

I was only going by what independent audio said... They said they are haveing trouble with all the units that phoenix sent them recently…independent audio is the U.S. distributor ..
I did love the sound if it I have to say. I wish I could have got one that worked… I think its worth letting people know about the issues…

this is the reason I have started this thread - I wanted to hear real life experiences. But it really narrows down to try both of them. there were both excellent and very bad reviews to both of the products, in each case somebody responded that he had a faulty unit ... so god knows

i used to be the trumpeter of all things nicerizer, but it appears phoenix is adrift somewhere at sea. too bad, their gear sounds as good or better than anything on the planet.

i'd have to say the new colorbox champion is the tonelux, this thing is like the studer and the nicer in that what goes in comes out sounding better in every way. it's the perfect contrast to the nicer too, when i push the phoenix things get gooey and thicker in a very lovely way, when i push the tonelux things get bigger and hit harder.

I really hope for it, while still wait for Tonelux.
Anyway I'll not replace Nicerizer or Mixdream with Tonelux, I decided to keep them all and even with addition of 32-48 ch console in upcoming future I see all mentioned summing boxes as part of stuido set up.

morpheuzrecords, are you sure it would be over 5000EUR. With VRack, PSU, (6)FX2 and (2)FX2+ you get 16channels of summing for 3513Euros. While still more expensive than than a Nicerizer, it' not 5000.

morpheuzrecords,

You probably are right. But I went to Tonelux website to find the price.

http://www.tonelux.com/ConfigulizerEU_USBeta.swf

Just configure your setup and make sure it's in Euros and not Dollars. But to be honest I didnt take into account any international "taxes or charges".
