This is a totally unanswerable question. One man's ratio is another man's mush (or something like that). Give it a whirl and make it sound good, and you will have found your answer.

If on the other hand, you're confused about the unusual "crest factor" and "release hysteresis" controls there is a DVD where George explains it a bit better than I could... They more or less effect the detector behavior, and thus the shape of the compression envelopes, like transient poke-thru and release character.

There may also be a webpage, or some kind of a downloadable manual that may lend some deeper perspective on what those do. Aha! here it is. Otherwise, just loop something thru the unit and mess with the controls until you can hear what they're doing!!

It may seem more complicated than it really is. Just spend some time with it. Or sell it to me for cheap

Dang man, did you just inherit a studio? You've been posting thread after thread asking about how to use your ultra high dollar gear! You gotta understand, there's these flaps of flesh on the side of your head that are called ears. They let you do this thing called "listening" which is the only real way to figure out "what ratio you use for Mastering" with a GML 8900.

Seriously, where/how/why'd you get all your gear?

Bob Katz has a good handbook for mastering. Look for that.

Otherwise I agree with the rest of these rude bastards.grudge
I`m jealous of your GMLfuuck and I want to personally come to your house to show you how to use it and sneak out the window with it when you go to take a leak.

Seriously good luck messing around with one of the finest.

I tried the high res files and seeing the sweat on George's face or more clarity on his shirt did not do it for me. I like the regular file better. The zoom on the video is different too on my screen.

Wish I could afford to buy several GML pieces. Seriously thinking about getting the 2 channel pre though. I like that they finally updated the front of the unit so the switches are in the front.
