Overhead mics

I really need a pair of mics that will work great on OH's, but I can't decide what to buy. I have one Soundelux U195 at the moment, and I really like it. And I'm thinking about getting another one so I can use them for recording OH's. Anybody use a pair of U195 for that? What do you think about it?

The other couple of mics I'm thinking about is C414 (I got none, so it will be a little more expensive) and Audio-Technica ATM450 (heard a couple of samples here on GS, and I really liked the sound, cheap too). Maybe there's some other mics I don't know about that will work?

I record most styles but mainly bands that play pop/rock/metal/punk.

A couple of used 414B-ULS's will run you under a thousand dollars and they are quite usefull. They're a studio staple. Why don't you try the 195 as a mono overhead and see if you love it. If you do, get another one. If not, get the 414's.

I would go for the two U195's for overheads, other than I love the U195 as a kick out mic. So I would leave that on the kick and get a pair of Josephson C42's as overheads. Then you would have a great sounding kick and overheads.

A pair of U195's work very well on overheads....huge sound. Since your in Europe, you may want to check out a pair of cardiod Schoeps (specificallly the CMC 6 body with MK4 capsules), best small diaphragm condensers in the world IMO that are currently made.

Since you mentioned the Schoeps CMC6 I have to mention my favorite overhead mic. The Peluso CEMC-6. I can't compare it to the Schoeps it's modeled after, but it's beautiful in it's own right.

I have tried the U195 as mono OH, and I did like the result. But I like the stereo OH sound better. I have tried C414 as OH mics (in another studio) and I liked the sound of them too. If I get another U195 I'll have the same mics just two of that one; if I get for example a pair of 414's I'll get a different (*2) mic in my locker, and I will probably not only use them for OH.

The Schoeps looks nice, but I don't think I can afford two of them at the moment. I need to buy some other stuff too.

Two C414 for under $1000 sounds really good, but I haven't been able to find them that cheap anywhere near me. But if anybody knows where I can get them around that price in europe, please tell me

Damn, it's hard to decide.

I suggest the B-ULS if you're looking at 414's. You can find them regurarly on ebay - going for right around $500 apiece. Good luck. bp

I really like a pair of Gefell M-930's on overheads and the U-195 on kik. The Josephson C-42's are nice on overheads as well.
