Best console for Hip Hop/Rap for $150K? I assume SSL 4000 G series which is a little gritier for hip hop/rap. Can a great condition SSL 4000 G be had for $150k or am I dreaming?

im pretty sure they can be had for alot less than that. i've seen then go for around 50k (but im not sure if it was the E series or the G series, but even if its the E series i cant imagine G's being 100k more than the E's)

G+ is better.

An E/G is cool also.

Depends if you want Ultimation/Totall recall or not.

Looks like you should be in that ballpark range.

Total recall & ultimation a must. Been trapped in a protools world. SSL console prices have dipped considerably since the last time I checked. Been tracking ProTools in-house, then mixing at one of the many SSL rooms in NYC. Have yet to get a ProTools mix to sound like and SSL mix- even w/ outboard. But we r tired of those SSL room rates- mine as well get ur own.

An SSL is great, but you'd better be damn sure you're ready to take proper care of it- that you have access to people who can fix its fairly regular issues and that you will pay them on time, because if you don't, they don't show up again.

Rob's right.

Don't forget that you'll also need serious and reliable aircon for both the CR and the machine room (you might need to expand the machine room quite a bit as well). The console and the aircon add up to higher power bills, adding easily an additional 600 bucks per month. Also, the CR aircon must be inaudible !

Good thing you're not looking for a J, used ones are in the $250-500k range.

I also agree....its really only half the battle buying the console. Infrastructure is numero uno importance before the board arrives. You really need a ultra climate control machine room (mentioned above) and be ready to do some maintenance....

ProTools rooms are so much simplier. John Storyk is building the new room. We told them large format console, probably SSL. Will make sure they take all that into account but I believe they have already. We have a tech/house engineer who worked at Sony & Quad for quite some time that assures us we will stay up & running.
