Avalon is perfection, ive come full circle

Just had to say that Avalon gear is really sweet stuff and no its not the only gear ive ever dated...lol I realize that having a great warm board with big sounding pre's, great monitors, room sound, mics etc comes with the plan. Ive been through the Focusrite, Trident, Neve and a bunch of other pres and i keep running back to the 2022s. I remember reading a post on here last week about guys wanting a wider more open sound in there mixes, well here you go, Avalon 2022, 2044, 2055 has a giant open wide sound, the secert on the 2044 is running the output amps on 10, this is simular to the way engineers like running the gain up on API's and backing down on the output, i guess the 2044 is ass backwards in a sense. And getting back to the 2022s, you could not ask for a no brainer pre that is HUGE and very open. Here is the key of sucess for my studio having a great sound, YES i have come full circle and have a killer studio sound even with the crappy bands, they leave sounding like commericial label bands, just some bad notes or timing issues, hey they are learning, we once did.
I did not have this HUGE sound until i started using Avalon......i realize they are Avalon haters out there so go ahead and bash me.

Tascam m-2600 32 channel board, old school but great warm big pres, tons of clean eq
Akai DR16s and DR4s as my recorders, warmest digital stuff ive ever used,12 yr strong
KRK V8, V6
Avalon, 2022 (2), 2044
Edison
U47 fet, u87, GT66, GT44s AM40, 414s,vocal, guitar mics
D112, 421,sm57, sm81, e3000 <<< drum mics
AT ae3000 <<< the bomb for non electric wooden intruments.

this is not my complete mic locker and rack gear but its what makes the studio sweet.

I realize for the PT guys that some of this gear would not work for you because you guys use plugins etc,

My Recordings/Credits

I'm a Pro Tools guy and use plugs once recorded ITB. However, I prefer lots of nice analogue gear going in. Amongst my aux gear and mics I have a few Avalon pieces that have been around for about 6 years.
2022, 2044, 2055, 737(2), U5 (2). No bashing here.

Couldn't agree more! I run my 2022 to a Rosetta 200 and it is a sweet combo. Q: Have you tried the 2022 with Ribbons?

I still like the way an R88 (stereo ribbon) sounds with the 2022.

Question for you guys...
How does the Pre/Comp/Eq in the 737 differ from the 2022, 2044, 2055?

Here's my thought on that:
1. the 737 is tube, and tube is great, and the other models where it be pre's , compressors eq are NOT tube, even as warm sounding as a 737 is, it just does not match up to the 2022, 2044, M5 and 2055 openess. Also i think the 737 has noise where the other units are quite as a mouse, extreme quiet. I have owned many 737 and i keep selling them altho i think the 737 is a great first aid kit when you need to warm up something thats been recorded with a cold sound.
Again the 2022, 2044,2055, M5 and the 2077 are FAR more high end gear than the 737.

Try pluging a bass in a 2022 vs and 737 with or w/o compressor eq etc, the 2022 will smoke the 737, same with vocals and other instruments. I hardly ever use a compressor using the 2022, it can take it in hard and come out smooth as silk.
As far as the 2044, i use it as a insert 2 buss mix across the board, sweet so sweet, dont forget to run the output amps on 10 to get that edge and iron in the mix. come in soft and leave wide open, then the 2044 will really open up evertime.
Hope this helps !!! just my thoughts.

Wow, what kind of weed are you getting out there...?

Seriously, though... there was never anything wrong with the AD20xx, and M series of products. It was the 737 that was mediocre...

I could not agree more, i think the 737 is Avalons weakess link by far, I cannot place my finger on it but the compressor sucks, eq is ok and the pre is so so. But again the 737 has got me out of a mess but not worth the $$$.

I have a pair of 737's and a U5 and I've always thought they were great. The 737's are awsome on vox and acoustic guitars. The U5 is great on bass and any DI.

I thought the very same thing with the 737, i swore by it, but someone got me to test drive a 2022 or M5 and thats when i tossed the 737 on ebay. The way the preamp opens up is enough to change your mind within 30 seconds. I also got tired of the noise that the 737s gave, damn i hate hiss and noise. the 737 is like having tunnel vision and the 2022 is like having a wide angle lens on a camera...make sense ??

I have a 2044, 2055 and the U5 and recently came back around to them as well. I started doing some of my mixes analog and strapping that Avalon stuff across the mix buss has been very fun and has really opened things up.

Has anyone ever used a pair of Crane Song Trakkers on the mix buss? I have a second Trakker on the way and will consider selling the 2044 if the Trakkers get the job done.

The Avalon M5 is always one of my first choices for Vocals. Very open and transparent
sounding.
I also like the 2055 as it has that Avalon shimmering. Nice for Pop / R&B.

We had 2 VT737, but sold them. The money is in the EQ. The 737 EQ is really great,
the pre is so so and the compressor (without the Babyface mod) was useless at least for me.

The VT series is a complete different topology and has nothing (maybe the eq a bit) in common with the 20 and M series and modular rackseries (where Avalon started)
