Beyer MC930 & M160 impressions

Thought I'd pass this on. I had a pair of each in the studio for a couple of weeks, ad I have to say I was quite impressed.

MC930:

Unfortunately I had a chance to only use these on one track for acoustic guitar (D28). XY standard set up. Compared to the Josephson C42's we used prior on the album, the 930's had a much bigger more natural sound. No 5k bump, but very detailed in sound as well as being quite a sensative mic. All were extremely impressed with this mic. It really sounded good on the finger picking sections. My guess is that it would be fantastic on a nylon stringed guitar and drum OHs. IMO they're the best bang for the buck SDC out there, and are great at any price.

M160:

Again, these little buggers are great. For those of you who find the 121 a bit dark for certain E guitar apps, these are the ticket. Where I would put a 121/57 combo on E guitar, a single M160 had it covered.

On acoustic they had a definate color, kind of old school - detailed and big, but not nessecarily "Hi Fi". Cool sound.

Great on OH's, snare, HH, and room as well. I find these mics to be an extremely versatile and usefull set - not just some oddity that you might use for shits and giggles.

Anyhow, I brought these in for the hell of it with no intention of keeping them - but I ended up purchasing both pairs. I've never had much experience with Beyer products, but I'm definately a fan now. Don't let the reasonable prices fool you, these mics deliver

Thanks for the report!! I just ordered some mc930's so it's good to hear more positive opinions. C42's were my other option so you're helping me think I made the right choice! (especially since the 930's were more $).

I've only heard an M160 briefly in a room mic M-S setup on some drums but it sounded great! I've been thinking about these as my next mic purchase. It looks like they have a lot of uses; have you tried them on vox at all?

Craig.

Not on VOX yet, I didn't have them in time or I would have set one up for the scratch tracks just to see.

I just paid $1299 Canadian for a pair. You can get them here for $999 USD:

A single one is about $499 USD. The bonus with the "matched set" is that you get shockmounts.

Seems that the mc930 is a great sdc but how does compare to a schoeps Mk 4/CMC 6 or gefell M 300 (especially with acoustic guitars)? Is it in the same league?

The MC930s are very detailed with a full low end that isn't mushy -- Great on acoustic instruments.

The off-axis response is very, very nice.

I just tracked a violin last night with one, and I'm pleased.

I have, one singer who I usually use a R84 with sounded great with a M160, I cant which I prefered as the sessions were spread out but it was all there, the big round ribbon tone, that added some balls to an otherwise weak singer.

Awesome. I'm thinking of these mics for a lot of drum overhead use as well as some acoustic guitar. I found the MC930's for under $800 for the pair, which seems like a good deal.

I find the M160 too dark for overheads. But with correcting that with an eq they are awsome.

Cranesong spider as preamp.

I guess I'm one of the early supporters of the MC930.

Yeap, It was your review that peak my interest and I must say the MC930s are beautiful for OH, acoustic, and B3. They replaced my KM184s by the way.

A cymbal track recorded with a M 160 stopped me dead in my tracks once...had to know what it was, that could make metal sound like butter thumbsup

god i want an m160 for acoustic... it's exactly my style but like everything, it's out of my price range. After hearing some sound samples in a huge mic shootout, I was sold. Liked it better than all those LDCs with treble boosts in the high end

Anyone tried the Glyn Johns technique for drum "overheads" with a pair of M160s instead of LDCs.

You think the hypercardioid pattern would be too narrow?

I just ordered a pair or MC930s..

I'm most curious to see how they fair with various acoustic guitar duties (steel and nylon string)...

But damn sure I will try them on everything I can!

I didn't like the mc930's in my room. I ended up taking a hit and getting a pair of KM84's. I am broke but happy.
