Thread Starter | converter upgrade - 2 channel, or 8?
i'm looking to upgrade the a/d converters in our studio, and am writing for opinions on whether to purchase the rosetta 200, or the rosetta 800. when i mic anything in the studio (vocal, ac gtr, gtr cabs, etc), i rarely use more than 2 channels at once. however, drums are a different story. i'll usually mic up 8-12 mics and then sort out the ones that i need/don't need. the rosetta 200 could be used for 2 crucial drum channels, the rest would go through digi002 conversion. the 8 channel version would allow more of the drum channels to pass through. so my question is this - does the extra $1000 between the rosetta 200 and the 800 justify the purchase of the 8 channel converter for the extra channels used on drums? opinions appreciated! |

The last time I tracked drums, I used this exact setup: Digi002 & Rosetta 800. I only used the 002 conversion for hi-hat & ride, which were the tracks I expected to use the least in the mix because the overheads & room mics picked up most of what I needed for cymbals. I would rather have at least 4 tracks(kick, snare & overheads) going to the best conversion that I have access to. I love having 8 tracks, though. I've seen the 800 sold for $2,000, used. I would spend the extra $500+ for it.

I think the price difference is worth it, unless you only need 2 channels for everything. That's a possibility for some people, but not when you're tracking drums.

I bought the 800. For me it was easy. I wanted to be able to patch stuff in for mixdown. I also think it's a drag when you run out of "good" channels. |
