Monitoring nuendo suggestions? Avocet, dac1 etc.

Upgrading my d\a for monitoring from ff800 w\ nuendo 3.

Ideally I'd like to monitor with a cranesong hedd, lavry blue, or lynx but I gotsta have that volume knob. I'm ITB, so monitor volume is a bit scary by clicking around with a mouse. No real emergency mute to save my monitors if the pc locks up or something goes wrong. Maybe some sorts of a passive volume controller after the d\a?

The other option is the benchmark dac1 or cranesong avocet. Just hate to drop the cash when I could simply monitor out something lavry or lynx if it just had feesable volume control.

Anyone in the same boat or have suggestions that I've overlooked?
Thanks, Adam

If you're dead set on the Lavry or Lynx, you can couple them with a passive volume controller (either find a high-quality potmeter yourself or buy something like a NHT PVC). But if you can use the extended options an Avocet has (multiple inputs/outputs, high quality headphone amp) then I'd highly recommend it, sounds and works great.

i use the dac-1 with my nuendo/sx system and i could not be happier. the additional headphones (2) and that yu can use xlr balanced (feeding monitoring) and unbalanced RCA at the same time open any possiilties of monitoring and routing someone can think of.
the volume knob has fine detents which are very handy to set up comparing levels from one day to the other - when you have to work on a monitoring system without that, you learn how valuable that tiny little feature is.
and the dac-1 sound is prestine. you have to put a lot more money out to get better sonics, and the claims benchmark does, are true. you hear more, better and finally get more done. awesome.
no, i have no affiliation with them ;
