Show me your rack!!

Sounds like I'm back on the tour bus.

No not that rack, your equipment rack.
How are you guys organizing the gear?
By dynamics, comp/lim, effects.......
or do you have another system.

how do you handle heat/ vents? tube gear top, solid state bottom?

Feel free to post pic's, I'd love to see em.

I know this is a open question and as I stated in another post, if this question is to lame just let me know.

here's my rack, my friend converted an old dresser into a 48-space rack...I know there are holes, but they will be filled shortly.

Not much of a rack, but it looks a lot cooler when I've rented the Neve's and whatnot...

sweet mother of god!

edit: I was actually responding to an awesome gear rack above this post but it appears to have been deleted. I was definitely NOT responding to the bad CG model.

One of the racks.....

Not arranged in any particular way other than for easy access to the back, which is open for ventilation.

Rack design/location

Hi all,

I am designing a new control room and one of the hard parts I find is where to locate the racks containing audio gear (not midi). According to the thread on racks that's going on at the moment, I'm not the only one. It would appear that Dave Martin's idea of placement is one of the most usual.

A couple of questions:

How low can you rack gear before it becomes a pain to operate?

How many units in a rack before it gets to be too high and causes unwanted reflections?

I had thought of two tall racks to the right of the engineer and two smaller ones out in a more central position. I need at least 40u of space just for pres, compressors and fx.

I'm going to try to attach a basic drawing of my plan. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

NB: 2 Racks side by side equal approx 1 meter.

That depends in large part on the angles of the racks, the depth of the room and the height of your chair. I built my racks so that I can reach (and read the knobs) on the bottom piece of equipment without bending over. And think of the angles of the racks with thinking about reflection as well; mine are built at an angle so that reflections off the racks bounce into absorbers on the ceiling rather than back into the mix position. if I had to do it again, I might have made the angle a bit more steeper, but that would have taken more depth. I've got the room for that, but there was a point of diminishing returns.

If it helps, the racks and Nashville's Tracking Room are almost horizontal, specifically so that sound won't reflect off of them, But I've got more ouboard gear than the tracking room does...

You know, you really know you're getting old when you realize thirty years after the fact that the neat box of switches and lamps that you bought at the "Ax-Man" surplus store was in reality the remote control for a 3M tape machine.

I suppose all that Nortronics crap I threw
away wasn't worth anything either?

What about that MR-70 thingy I scrapped out? Or that piece of crap LA-2A whatzit?

Scares me sometimes...
