Thanks guys! this thread is mega helpful!
I actually learned this on gearslutz, but basically I start out with the 57 on-axis right on the cone to get the brightest tone, then back up a bit until the low end kicks in. Then I bring in the second mic with the phase already flipped and do the off-axis. Try to get the most canceled sound I can get, obviously using headphones (extreme isolation ones rule). Then go back to the control room, flip that phase back and, tadda!

no one talked about the use of M88 ?

ok, last guitar i recorded (telecaster thrue Orange Head and London City cab modified with 2 celestion Vintage in), i close miked in axis of 1 of the celestion with an M88, and the original speaker Off axis with e609 + a NT2 as room mike 6 feet away.

Mixing M88 full center, e609 on the right and NT2 on the left.

sounded pretty large and finally Mono-compatible.

***in around with the phase is what gives the space, especially with several guitars layers (close mike on a side and room on the other, and opposite for a second guitar without correcting phase)

sorry no pix

other experience i made like follow :

guitar > tremolo> splitted with RE-201 space echo reissue in 3 amps :
Left to right :
Baby Blue SWR (bass amp) miked with D112
London city Head with 2x12" yamaha cab miked with 421
Hugh&kethner Tube50 with e609
+ a XY pair of akg C535 9 feet away
reproducing the position of the amp with the panning in the mix and... reverse the pans of the stereo pair

you can check the result (sadly baaaaaaaaaad myspace mp3) :
MySpace.com - Solar Skeletons - SUN, SOLAR SYSTEM - Industrial / Folk - www.myspace.com/solarskeletons
the "moisted blues" song.

Just for giggles I tried it once, and it's become my new starting point for 421s. Great for that slightly hollow/nasal early-master-volume-Marshall tone.
Just make sure the guitar player hears it before he sees it.

Left speaker: celestion G12/65, Sennheiser MD421 into Manley Voxbox.
Right speaker: Celestion Vintage30, Crowley&Tripp NakedEye Roswellite into Chandler Germanium.

I've also got some audio files which I'll try to attach to the next post(s).

There's 1 MP3 of each spkr./mic/pre combo and one file with 2 takes of each, layered and spread L/R.
Original recordings were 96kHz/24bit, direct to disk. No compression, EQ or normalizing.

Guitar was a Strat-body with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates bridge PU into an Engl Savage60 amp.

Go for it. They sound 1.3x better than the 57.

Zip ties to match the gaudy colouring of the amp or just channel identification?

this is the set up I just did for my band's new CD recording

I've used SM57's, MD421's, Roger 121, 414, API and GreatRiver pre's on them

I am sooooo thrilled with the "beefiness" of the guitars, absolutely loved it

Trying 'em all

From a session last night. Going for a Son Volt-esqe grind with some Voxy chime. (Bad Cat did this nicely.) EV Cardinal was a surprise. Full-bodied—especially in the low mids. 57 did what you'd expect. KM184 was a disappointment. Gefell (UMT70S) in figure-eight added some nice sparkle and a bit of room. All through Avedis MA5 (except the Gefell, which went to a Great River), to AD16X, to PT.

A true guitar slutz session

Recording session for RR amplifiers. Purpose of the session was to record reference samples of the custom RR tube amp for use on the builder's website. All recordings are just the guitar plugged straight into the amp. After the business-part of the session we had some good fun playing with all the goodies in the rack .

I'll see if I can upload some sound samples of this session later or you can listen to them at : Welkom op de site van RR Amplifiers ( English version not working, but you can find the samples on the Dutch page under media ).

Cheers,
Martijn.

Most of the time I mic the room as well. You can't see it in the pics but I'm using a AKG C422 in M/S for room tone. For me it's a substantial part of the sound. Using only close mics I'd say the room does matter depending on where the amp is placed. I get different sounds placing an amp in a corner, directly on the floor ( wood, concrete or tiles give different sounds ) or decoupled from the floor.

Cheers,
Martijn.

Thanks for that mate. I am in the middle of acoustically treating my tracking room which is very small and boxy and am interested to see if the treatment effects the sonics of my close micd guitar cabs. Guess I will find out.

Awesome photos, digitalM!!

I can't get the samples to work on the website, if you're able to upload some here that would be great.
