| Lives for gear | Here's my "stack"... It's a lovely, green mother-of-toilet-seat Magnatone -- er -- guitar cabinet (ok, maybe just a guitar cubby), miked-up with an esoteric, vintage 1980s Shure SM57. ![]() |

| Two cab's enter... one Royer leaves... (for those who remember 'Beyond Thunderdome') The 4x12 pointed at the back side of the R-121 has the speaker cable's polarity reversed. All speakers move in the same direction (one cab pushes while the other pulls)...

| Tim L I understand the wiring and all that. I just do not get the point. What type of sound are you trying to get here? |

| Gear maniac | the mics aren't really in place on this one, but the guitars and amps look pretty cool. that's a Shure 56 and a Sennheiser MKH-40. We used the Bad Cat a lot. |

| Gear nut | I'm amazed at the amount of people liking the Royer, I borrowed one the other week and sent it back within a day, didn't rock my world in the slightest. Always come back to the good ol 57 on a vintage 30...ho hum. |

| Lives for gear | It's just a promo pic for my website, but i DID get some great sounds thru the Mini Twin: Danelectro Convertible to POD to Mini Twin miked with 57, I would call the results 'evil twang' or something. Andi www.doorknocker.ch |

| The B&O stereo ribbon was delayed by some 20 ms to create a bigger ambience. The other mics were in phase with each other. ![]() |

| Trusty Alamo. The 4047 is about 3 feet back. Moving the amp closer and further from the wall helps dial in the low end. I also prefer micing from out in the room vs close micing. Depends, though. |

When this techniques done right you can get a rich and complex gtr tone to a single track with a single mic. I read about people using this a few years ago. Then I heard a track that Fletcher engineered and submitted to one of the rec.audio.pro compilation discs (RAP 3 times) called "Sunglasses" by El Camino. He used this technique on one of the gtr parts and I really liked the way it sounded (not to mention the rest of the tune)... so I gave it a shot and loved it. If you've got these discs give it a listen! Here's some recording notes for "Sunglasses" if you're interested...Link Click on Disc 1 track 6 Perhaps if Fletcher reads this he could share some thoughts on this kinda setup... | |

| These next two are from last nights OD session 'till 4:30am. I needed a beefy, percussive tone. Thanks Eddie Kramer and Michael Wagener. |

| Number 2 It just goes to show that some of the old 'tried and true' methods are the only ones necessary. |

| And number 3. This one features the amps used in the production. If it isn't obvious that I'm clearly bored, what with posting all these pictures. I've been subjected to some lame jazz then a session with even lamer r&b/gospel/instrumental...........sigh.... |

| From the session last night: Engl S.E. amp using a V30 speaker cab, mic'ed with a R-121 and a SM57, both going into the Chandler TG2. The SM57 was "IBP-ed" after the preamp to get maximum phase coherentie. For any ENGL lovers, you owe it to yourself to check the S.E., it definitely is THE MOA ENGls Greetings, Dirk

| Who could forget Thunderdome? "We don't need another hero, we just need to mic a guitar cab...." I like your ribbon idea. it has a simple elegance. [QUOTE]Originally posted by Tim L [B]Two cab's enter... one Royer leaves... (for those who remember 'Beyond Thunderdome') |

| Gear addict | A MD409 and a backwards phasereversed R121 at about 10" from the cab and a SM57 on the grill. The SM57 is mounted on a remotecontrolled mic positioner (vertically positioning only) and phase adjusted with the other two mics through a IBPjr. All channels usually through Great River MP2NV's. |

| Here's a link to a few pics from a recent session. Nothing groundbreaking here.....57 and 421 pushed in the grill. Fun pics though if you like looking at cool gear pics. http://tinyurl.com/6bfgy later, m |
