complete noob question for all you PROs. Whats the MOST important, treated room, good mic, or good pre. If ONE of these three things had to suck, what would yeild the best result? Second, how important is the room when using dynamic mics like the 609 or the 57 close up?

Why do you have the tops of all the side address mics pointed at the speakers?

Not sure about the Kel mic, but the PR40 is not side address.

Just look at the mic, you can see the capsule. Its side address. The picture in your link is even clearer as they removed the top. Its also clearly stated in the manual that comes with it that the side with the logo is the front

Although I dont have a picture of a quick session I did last friday night.. This chain sounded really good..

Rock/Country tune..

Telecaster.. Lindy Fralin pickups - Peavey Vipre 1x12 combo amp.. Royer 122- Api 3124 pre ..

The amp was in the control room. Volume was set really low and I cranked the
API pre for makeup gain. Just moved the royer around till I found the sweet spot using headphones..Slighty off axis - about 2 inches away from the grill

One of the best guitar sounds I ever got..

Guys- Check out those Peavey vipre amps... Highly underated..!

If you mean the sound of the 57's diaphragm being raped from heavy guitar sounds then yes, I do until I pull it back a few inches...then the tone I wanted changes

I have them here at the store. I always thought they sounded good, have only heard complaints that they come back a lot. They have some killer models and recently came out with tube versions, kinda like th Bogner versions of the Line6 combos. I personally use the Fender SuperChamp. I switched the tubes out for Mesa Boogie tube. It's a amazing with an sm7 and an AEA R92 in front of it.

Look at the capsule and you'll see. Plus I have two and can confirm they're side address.

Perhaps they're placed different on the speakers for artistic reasons

Actually, that P.E. can often be helpful in turning some guitarists' trebly, "real" tone into the beefy wallopp they expect and are used to from the records they listen to.
Ribbon mics with their fig.-8 pickup pattern exhibit even more proximity effect than other mics and have a softer top as well.

Few pics from recent "almost on location" session.
Mics:
T.b. Cheap ribbon
Sennheiser md421
Akg C414 (Omni) behind the amp
Akg C414 (Omni) in the room

This setup was used for some overdubs, and with few tracks with Martin acoustic guitar plucked into the amp.

Using this setup for our next release. Maybe I should add a dedicated room mic, because I really like how the figure 8 of the royer adds more dimension to the close mic sound by picking up some of the room wash. The 421 went into the Germanium, while the Royer 121 went into the Avedis MA5. We used the backside of the Royer for a little more bite.

To align the phase relationship we put the guitar pickups near a laptop to get some funky midrange interference through the speaker, then tried to null it out as best we could with one of the mics having reverse polarity. Then flipped it back. Also tried Mr Wagener's 'middle of the head' trick for kicks too

any way, here is what I did lately and worked wonderful
