AEA TRP & AEA R92 - Need Advice

I just bought an R92 and I am considering preamps. I am really trying to convince myself to get the AEA TRP over the GReat River 2 NV and I wanted to get your take on this.

I currently use a digi -002R and it's pre's and I am not getting the tone I want. Do you think the TRP would ba a major improvement over the digi (I know the answers obvious but I just want to hear it) and do you think I would be happy with it for recording electric guitar?

The amp I use is a Carvin Legacy and a Legacy 2x12 cab. Clean and dirty.

I've been really considering the Great River 2NV and I'm sure the Great River is "Great" but the cost of the AEA would let me get it much sooner.

I plan to use the R92 and an SM57 to record my amp and I will be recording acoustic as well.

I appreciate your help.

Well,

I use the AEA R92 to AEA TRP to record acoustic guitar and voice. Sounds real nice to me. Analog sounding even when tracked to digital. Of course, the Great River's supposed to be a great piece too and it has on board phantom power for condenser's which the AEA TRP does not, but you probably knew that already.

For the price, it's hard to beat the AEA R92 with the AEA TRP.

The AEA TRP is more of a wire-with-gain design, not any color to speak of.

The first question for me is, are you getting the tone you want straight out of the amp, or are you looking for a little more tonally speaking?

If you're happy with the tone from the amp and guitar, then the TRP will be perfect. Straight translation for a great sound.

If you need a little more to the tone, or want more tonal options, then i am afraid it is going to have to be the GR.

I recently brought over my AEA TRP to Brad McGowan's studio and we did some comparisons to his other, more colored pres using a Royer 121. The TRP was an completely different animal compared to the colored pres ( API, Pacifica, Eisen). It was so clean and open that it really was like lifting a veil from the ribbon mic. Very 3-dimensional and detailed sounding as well. We were recording a clean electric guitar through his very cool Fender combo (modified, of course - if you know Brad you know why I'm saying "of course").

We didn't have time to record distorted guitar the day I was over. However, you're not going to believe this, but I have a Carvin Legacy with a Legacy 4x12, I have a Royer 121 ribbon, a SM57, and I have a Pacifica, Great River and the AEA TRP. For the right price, I might be convinced to post a few clips for you. I've been promising some Pacifica clips anyway, so if you slip me a few bucks I'll post some TRP and Great River as well....

Best Regards,

Mike.

That's the wrong way to decide. It's always cheaper adn faster to buy the rigth pre for yoru needs the first time. If the GR is teh right one for you and you buy the other, it's going to cost you far more money and time until you have the right pre.

Demo them both from Mercenary to determine the right choice and then figure out the money.

I agree..... I'm going to continue researching until I figure out which pre would be best for me and work towards getting it. Thanks Mike for smacking me in the head. I need to be a little more patient.

You know I was kidding about the money, right??? I will do my best to post a few clips this weekend - for free! I've been busy building bass traps which has slowed me down a bit. As of today, they are all built and hung so this weekend looks good. I'll pm you when I post so that you don't miss it.

Best Regards,

Mike.

I wasn't sure to be honest.

I'm new to this forum so I haven't gotten to know you yet. I really appreciate the help!
