I would suggest the stroboflip for that purpose.
The stroboflip in nice as it folds up and the screen stays protected, plus the possible auto shut off setting will save you a ton of batteries in the long run.

Compare features on the stroboflip and the VSAM and see which has more of what you need.

I recently tuned my Rhodes using the VSAM, it worked out fine.

I chose to go with standard tuning instead of stretch but stretch would have been a piece of cake.

Over the years I've had several Conns and Petersons. The vintage ones are not going to buy you much, in my opinion, but a larger size and weight and possibly the need to be extra careful.

I now use the stomp box model, which took a little getting used to but which has some nice features missing in the vintage rack mounted versions.

You might be better served to have the V-SAM if you need to handle more than just guitars and basses on a regular basis.

Peterson says Moog Inc uses the 490 so that's good enough for my purposes, gonna get me one.

I've had all kinds of Conn and Peterson strobes since the 70s . . . they are great to have. I have had a Peterson R450 for years. Use it all the time. Their service is also great IF you ever need it. A trick from an old fart (me) . . . if you are tracking in the control room (bass / gtr) run an aux line off the channel (of the console) you are recording into the strobe . . . you can tune w/o unplugging. Of course if it's a distorted gtr . . . just pop off distortion or any other effects.

The Peterson tunes fine but I've had quality issues with my flip. It puts noise in the line, it chews batteries, it stopped working. Went in for repairs and came back noisy. The screen reacts slow. My buddy has the Peterson pedal and his died/ had problems with the DI. etc.. etc. The support gave me attitude.

I've moved on and I went with Strobe Tuners by Sonic Research - Turbo Tuner Home Page and am very happy.

Anyone know how to get those darn rubber feet off the analog Strobe 490?

Picked up the rack mount kit for it. The hex nuts inside the unit are located deep down in the electronics...don't see any way to get down in there without some secret tool?

I have a Strobo Stomp and the clip on Peterson, got rid of the 450R some years ago. But wouldn't you want a frequency counter for tuning oscillators?

The clip on is really something, with sweetened tunings, capoed tunings, open tunings...

I have Peterson StroboSoft loaded into my MBP.

I can bring it up any time I need to check tuning through
the signal chain, so it's quite convenient.

I keep a Stroboflip attached to my music stand. However, I really love the TurboTuner ST-122. Strobe Tuners by Sonic Research - Turbo Tuner Home Page You can read it across the room. When playing with a group, I'll put one up in the room and let it run. If anyone wants to tune, they just need to look up.

Peterson

I have one of all the analogue models right back to the first , and i also have the first digital model cos it remembers steel tunings ,
i like em better than the Conn , and i have etched with a peterson for all the guitar players i ever wired with,
can't beat em, just make sure you keep the maintenance up

I second the Sonic Research Turbo Tuner. Cheaper and better than the Peterson's I have tried.

I have a Strobe O Flip. It has built in tunings for Pedal Steel Guitar, althought I have programmed my own Pedal Steel settings into it.

According to Peterson, from a Facebook post, there will be a new version of the iPhone/iPad app that will allow programming your own tuning. The current version does not do this (but Cleartune does).
