I feel you, man. But other than the cost of tape, don't you kinda miss that stuff? I do.

My old friend (who just happens to be one of the best engineers and coolest people that I've ever known), was named chris p. Are you him?

We're going OT.....

Key word being "tones" and not "tone, I'd say the Beatles, Jimmi Page and Hendrix had some of the best diversity of good guitar tones.

As far as singling out certain recorded tones that really moved me:

Hendrix's tone on Machine Gun

That Brian May dry in your face lead tone.

EVH's rhythm early rhythm tone where he palm mutes and plucks chords with his pick and fingers.

Pat Metheny's tone on Bright Size Life and other early albums.

Mark Knopfler's tone on Sultans of Swing

Jimmi Page's Black Dog

Jeff Becks clean intro on Blue Wind

Generally, a lot of maintenance involved with analog tape machines. Digital and analog both have their ups and downs. Digital has come a long way and certainly isn't "Deth". Anything can be good if you learn how to use it properly.

but you cant say drums for example sound as cool on digital as they do tape..

HELL, yes!

I need to add Pete Townshend in the '70s (although I think his entire rig was gifted by Joe Walsh) and Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge of Swervedriver.

J. Mascis does a good job, too. -E

Cool person, possibly... best engineer... not even remotely close... just a long-time hobbyist hack/musician/gear junkie for the most part... so probably not me.

Yeah, despite all the tape-related quirks/hassles, it seems like I used to actually record more stuff then... though I was also young and had no real resposiblity either. I do feel bogged down in technology often... too many options instantly at hand these days. And there's certainly no replacement for good ol' tape saturation and warmth. Just wanted to let a 17-year old kid know that tape ain't an easy road sometimes. The only maintenance people are used to nowadays is defragging a drive and backing up files. Not a lot of knowhow/skill required there.

OK, back to the topic at hand.

Everyone knows it's Johnny 'Guitar' Watson.

Light years ahead of everyone else.

Heres' the iTunes link. Check out his '70's records while you're there.

Lennon's tone floors me, too. He had a real handle on rhythm playing.

...and there's Keef, Tosh, Nile Rogers.

I'm totally shocked that no one else mentioned Eric Johnson???? That guy has the most sought after tone in the world right behind Eddie's brown Sound. The only difference is no one has ever been able to pull of Eric's violin tone, but I have heard a lot of guys get the brown sound. Have any of you guys heard E.J's "Live from Austin City Limits" show? It just doesn't get any better for all around great tone as well as playing.

Yes, Larry Carlton, Skunk Baxter, and all the other studio cats that just don't get enough love.

Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order):

- Eric Johnson
- Joe Satriani (especially on "Crystal Planet")
- Mattias "IA" Eklundh (especially since the "Dead Soul Men" album)
- Allan Holdsworth
- George Benson
- Santana
- Fredrik Thordendal (so sorry that they changed to POD's)

I hear you! but I think it's because the people who listens to Eric Johnson is more "guitar oriented", do you know what I mean? People who play guitar (like me) is the most likely to know Eric's work. I guess that what I'm trying to say is that many of the greatest guitar tones comes from instrumental guitar music but obviously that's not mainstream so not so many people know those artists and their great tones.

Yeah I hear ya. I play the guitar as well, so that's why he's on the top of my list.

Paul Kossoff on the early Free stuff. Lead tones are good. The riff tone on "Alright Now" is pure ringing guitar under a brown halo.

We're getting in the ball park with Strat thru Tube Screamer into Deluxe Reverb on 10.

But I think Paul Kossoff was a strat thru Marshall. Although probably humbucking Les Paul.
